Plot twist

Part 2: The Digital Ledger

The heavy metal door at the bottom of the stairwell suddenly hissed open. A shift nurse in navy blue scrubs stepped onto the landing, her eyes widening in immediate alarm as she saw me sitting on the cold concrete floor, desperately cradling my seven-month pregnant belly.

"Oh my god! Are you alright?" she gasped, rushing forward to kneel beside me, her hands already reaching for her radio to call the trauma team. "What happened?"

"I slipped," I whispered, my voice sounding incredibly small, deadpan, and calculated. I didn't look back up at the landing. I knew David and his mistress were already backing away into the upper corridor, assuming the damage was done and that a frantic medical rescue would cover their tracks. "I just... lost my balance on the wet steps."

"Let's get you to triage right now," the nurse said, helping me stand with slow, agonizing precision.

Every muscle in my lower abdomen throbbed, but my baby girl gave a sudden, resilient kick against my ribs, as if confirming she had survived the impact. While the nurse wheeled me into the emergency evaluation unit, my hand remained buried deep inside the pocket of my camel coat, tightly clutching David's unlocked smartphone.

Once I was safely left alone behind the sterile white curtains of Room 12, waiting for the ultrasound technician, I pulled the device out. The screen was still active. I scrolled through the chat history with "Bave Bey"—the pseudonym for Victoria Vance, the senior managing partner at David's architectural firm and the very woman standing beside him on the steps.

The depravity of their conversation was laid bare in digital ink:

  • The Insurance Rider: Three weeks prior, David had quietly taken out a three-million-dollar supplemental maternal life insurance rider under my name, listing himself as the sole irrevocable beneficiary.

  • The Corporate Embezzlement: Victoria had been funneling millions of dollars from the firm’s development funds into an offshore account in Grand Cayman, and they needed my private inheritance capital to cover the missing audit balances before the quarterly board meeting on Friday morning.

  • The Final Strike: “The Central General stairwell has no camera coverage on the lower landing,” a text from Julian read. “Make it look like an accidental misstep due to the third-trimester center of gravity. Once she’s out, the firm is ours.”

A cold, sharp smile appeared on my lips under the dim hospital lights. They believed I was just a quiet, dependent housewife who spent her days decorating nurseries. They had completely forgotten that before I took a hiatus for this pregnancy, I was the head of forensic data compliance for the State District Attorney’s Office.

I opened the phone's native transfer application, routing the entire unencrypted chat history, the offshore bank account routing numbers, and the digital signatures directly to my personal secure server and to the private line of Chief Investigator Marcus Thorne.

"You wanted to utilize my gravity, David," I whispered, watching the progress bar hit one hundred percent. "Now, let's see how you handle yours."
