Plot twist

Part 2: The Sterling Vanguard

"I'm on the M15 bus, Dad," I whispered, pressing my forehead against the cold, vibrating glass of the window. "Caleb... he took my car. He told me to take the bus home because he was taking his family to Harrington’s."

The silence on the line lasted for exactly three seconds, but it carried the weight of a death sentence. When Harrison Sterling spoke again, his voice was no longer that of a worried father; it was the voice of a commander mobilizing an army.

"Stay exactly where you are, Cordelia. Do not get off that bus until my men reach you. I am dismantling the Thornes by sunset."

The call cut to black.

I looked out the window. At the very next red light, the midnight-black Maybach effortlessly glided up, stopping directly alongside the heavy frame of the city bus. Through the glass, I saw Caleb laughing warmly, tossing his head back as Brenda pointed at something on her phone. They were radiant, celebrating the arrival of my son while the mother of that child was riding a public transit vehicle, bleeding through her surgical dressings.

But their celebration was destined to be short-lived.

At exactly 1:45 PM, as the bus crawled toward the Meatpacking District, the sky above Hanover Street seemed to darken with the rhythmic, thumping roar of a low-flying aircraft. A sleek, corporate helicopter bearing the silver Sterling logo swept over the high-rises, its shadow cutting across the pavement.

Simultaneously, a synchronized line of six armored black Escalades surged from the side streets, completely cutting off the flow of traffic. They didn't just merge; they executed a flawless tactical box formation, trapping the black Maybach directly in the center of the intersection.

The bus came to a screeching halt. The passengers around me finally looked up from their phones, gasping as a dozen heavily armed private security details in tactical gear stepped out of the Escalades.

Caleb slammed his hands against the Maybach's steering wheel, his arrogant smile instantly vanishing as he tried to put the car in reverse, only to find another armored vehicle blocking his bumper by an inch.

The rear door of the lead Escalade opened. Harrison Sterling stepped out onto the New York asphalt, his custom charcoal suit immaculate, his eyes burning with a terrifying, ancient rage. He didn't look at the Maybach. He walked straight up the steps of the city bus.

The bus driver didn't even ask for his fare. He simply opened the doors, his hands shaking as my father stepped into the aisle. Harrison walked directly to my seat, his face softening into pure heartbreak for a fraction of a second as he saw the blood-stained twenty-dollar bill still clutched in my hand. He gently took Leo from my arms, handing him to a certified medical nurse who had followed him up the steps, before wrapping his heavy wool coat around my shoulders.

"You're safe now, Cordelia," he whispered, lifting me into his arms as if I were still the little girl who used to play in the apple orchards. "The Ray family lie is over. Now, they meet the Sterlings."
