Part 2: The Baby They Tried to Erase

Nobody spoke.
The frozen image on the television seemed to steal every breath from the room.
Barbara's fingers trembled against the edge of the dining table.
Daniel looked from the screen to his mother, then back again.
"What..." he whispered. "What am I looking at?"
Barbara recovered first.
"It's fake."
Her answer came too quickly.
"Someone edited that."
Melissa nodded so hard her earrings rattled.
"Exactly. Anybody can fake videos now."
But neither of them looked at the television.
They were looking at the flash drive.
At Ellie.
At me.
As though the smallest person in the room had suddenly become the most dangerous.
Daniel clicked the mouse.
The video resumed.
Barbara glanced down both ends of the maternity hallway before stepping toward the bassinets.
The camera had no audio, but every movement was painfully clear.
She leaned over one baby.
Adjusted the blanket.
Looked around again.
Then gently rolled one bassinet away while allowing the nurse pushing the other baby to continue down the hallway.
Nobody moved.
The footage ended.
A new file automatically opened.
This one had sound.
An older woman appeared on the screen.
She sat in a modest living room, wearing blue nursing scrubs.
Her silver hair was tied into a loose bun.
She looked directly into the camera.
"My name is Margaret Collins."
She took a shaky breath.
"I worked as a neonatal nurse at St. Andrew Medical Center for twenty-seven years."
Daniel frowned.
"I've seen her before."
I nodded slowly.
"So have I."
Then it hit me.
She had attended Barbara's seventieth birthday party two years earlier.
Barbara had introduced her as "an old family friend."
The woman continued.
"If you're watching this, it means I've either disappeared... or I've finally found the courage to tell the truth."
Barbara suddenly lunged toward the television.
Scott grabbed her arm.
"Mom!"
"Turn it off!"
Her voice cracked.
"Right now!"
Daniel ignored her.
Margaret continued speaking.
"Eight years ago, Barbara Reynolds approached me during a night shift."
The room became impossibly still.
"She offered me fifty thousand dollars."
Daniel's face turned white.
"For what?"
Margaret answered as though she had heard him.
"She wanted me to help her move one newborn from one room to another."
Melissa buried her face in her hands.
"No..."
"I refused."
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"But another nurse didn't."
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
Another nurse.
Young.
Smiling.
Her employee badge clearly visible.
Beneath it were three words.
Deceased. Car accident.
Barbara closed her eyes.
"Oh, God..."
Margaret spoke again.
"Officially, she died six months later in an accident."
She paused.
"I no longer believe it was an accident."
A chill ran through my entire body.
Daniel gripped the back of a chair so tightly his knuckles turned white.
"What baby?" he whispered.
"What did she do?"
Margaret looked directly into the camera.
"I never knew."
"I only knew Barbara kept saying one sentence over and over."
The recording captured Margaret imitating Barbara's voice.
"That child can never know."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Ellie slowly reached for my hand.
I squeezed it.
Daniel turned toward his mother.
"What child?"
Barbara refused to answer.
Instead, she stared at the floor.
For the first time since I had known her...
She looked old.
Very old.
Scott spoke carefully.
"Mom..."
"What is she talking about?"
Barbara whispered something too quietly to hear.
"What?"
Daniel demanded.
She looked up.
"I was protecting this family."
Melissa immediately nodded.
"Yes."
"Exactly."
Daniel rounded on his sister.
"Protecting us from what?"
Melissa couldn't answer.
The next video file began automatically.
This time the picture quality was much newer.
A hidden camera.
Barbara sat inside a private room at an upscale restaurant.
Across from her sat a man wearing an expensive gray suit.
His face remained partially hidden beneath the brim of a baseball cap.
His voice, however...
Daniel froze.
"I know that voice."
So did I.
Everyone did.
It belonged to Richard Hale.
The family's attorney for over thirty years.
Richard slid a folder across the table.
"The amended trust is ready."
Barbara opened it.
"No one questions why Ellie receives less?"
Richard smiled.
"They assume she's simply not your favorite."
Barbara laughed.
"Good."
Then she spoke the words that made every person in the dining room stop breathing.
"Why would I leave millions to a child who isn't actually my granddaughter?"
Daniel stumbled backward.
"What?"
Ellie looked confused.
"Dad?"
His face had gone completely pale.
Barbara immediately pointed at me.
"She cheated!"
The accusation exploded through the room.
"There!"
Barbara shouted.
"Now everyone knows!"
Daniel slowly turned toward me.
His eyes searched mine.
Not with anger.
With fear.
"Claire..."
"No."
I answered before he could even ask.
"I have never cheated on you."
Barbara laughed bitterly.
"You expect him to believe that?"
I stood.
"For eight years you've treated Ellie like she was worthless."
"You ignored birthdays."
"You skipped school plays."
"You forgot Christmas presents."
"You humiliated her every chance you got."
My voice shook.
"And now you expect us to believe this is because you suddenly discovered I was unfaithful?"
Barbara didn't answer.
Because she couldn't.
Daniel looked back at the television.
The lawyer's recording had not ended.
Richard leaned closer.
"Barbara... if Daniel ever orders another DNA test—"
"He won't."
"You seem very confident."
Barbara smiled.
"I already made sure the first one disappeared."
The recording stopped.
Daniel's breathing became uneven.
He turned slowly toward Melissa.
"The photograph."
Melissa avoided his eyes.
"The clinic."
"The cash."
Her lips trembled.
Daniel stepped closer.
"What test?"
Melissa burst into tears.
"I didn't want to."
Barbara shouted,
"Don't you dare!"
Melissa covered her face.
"Mom said it was the only way."
Daniel's voice became frighteningly calm.
"What."
"Way."
Melissa looked at Ellie.
Then at me.
Finally...
At Daniel.
"The DNA test..."
She whispered each word like it physically hurt.
"...proved Ellie was your daughter."
Nobody moved.
Daniel blinked once.
Twice.
Melissa sobbed harder.
"Your mother paid me to steal the results before you could see them."
Barbara screamed,
"She wasn't supposed to tell you!"
Daniel slowly looked at his mother.
Eight years.
Eight years of coldness.
Eight years of cruel comments.
Eight years of watching his own daughter being treated like an outsider.
All because of one lie.
But before anyone could speak...
The front door suddenly burst open.
Every head turned.
An elderly man none of us had ever seen stood in the doorway.
His suit was soaked from the rain.
His breathing was heavy.
In one hand he carried a battered leather briefcase.
In the other...
A faded hospital bracelet.
He looked straight at Barbara.
Then at Daniel.
Finally at Ellie.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"I'm too late..."
Barbara's face lost every trace of color.
The old man raised the hospital bracelet into the air.
"No..."
he said.
"You're asking the wrong question."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
The stranger swallowed.
"The DNA test was never the real secret."
He opened the briefcase.
Inside were two original birth certificates.
Identical.
Except for one line.
One listed Claire Morgan as the mother.
The other...
Listed a completely different woman.
The old man looked directly at Ellie.

Then spoke the words that shattered everything we thought we knew.
"The little girl you raised was never the baby Barbara took from that hallway."
