Plot twist

Part 3: The Liquidation of Gavin Brooks

The senior military officer sitting in the front row—Colonel Harrison, a man who had known my father for twenty years—stood up slowly, his face hardening into a terrifying expression of authority. He didn't look at me; his eyes were fixed on Gavin.

"Lieutenant Morgan," Colonel Harrison spoke, his voice booming through the cathedral rafters. "What is on that device?"

"This is the secondary sync log from my military satellite phone, Colonel," I stated, holding the device up so the entire room could see it. "Gavin forgot that my service phone automatically records and uploads all ambient audio within a ten-foot radius whenever an emergency signal is interrupted. It captured his voice explicitly detailing the insurance fraud, the pension liquidation, and his coordination with Alyssa to leave an active-duty officer to die in a federal park zone."

Gavin’s face completely drained of color. He looked back at his defense attorney, who was already packing his briefcase in the third row, completely abandoning the table.

"Turn it off, Morgan! Please, we can settle this!" Gavin begged, dropping his head as the front doors of the cathedral opened once more, admitting a squad of state investigators and military police officers.

I didn't answer him. I pressed play.

The crisp, high-fidelity audio of Gavin's voice filled the massive cathedral, bouncing off the stained-glass windows: "It was always about the money. The insurance, the house, the pension. You’re worth more to me dead than alive." Followed closely by Alyssa’s sharp, distinctive laugh: "Come on, babe. It’s freezing, and we still have a hundred-thousand-dollar funeral to plan."

The guests gasped, several of Gavin’s own business partners visibly recoiling in disgust as the audio continued to play. The state investigators moved down the aisle with practiced, clinical efficiency, passing right by me to pin Gavin against the edge of the empty mahogany casket.

"Gavin Brooks, Alyssa Vance, you are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and grand larceny," the lead officer announced, slamming Gavin’s hands behind his back. The metallic click of the handcuffs was the final chord of his execution.

Alyssa shrieked as an officer secured her wrists, her pristine society image completely shattering into a chaotic mess as they were dragged down the center aisle, past the two hundred guests who had just witnessed their entire conspiracy collapse in real-time.

I walked over to my empty casket, reached out, and gently pulled the American flag from the wood, folding it precisely over my forearm. I turned to the portrait of myself, a calm, victorious smile finally breaking through the dirt on my face. The wife they thought they could discard was gone, but the soldier had just secured the ultimate victory—and the line was officially closed.
