Plot twist

PART 3: THE CRUMBLES OF THE THRONE

Max walked up the creaking wooden stairs of the dilapidated apartment building on the West Side, the scent of peeling paint and damp air standing in stark, structural opposition to his lavish lifestyle. When the door to Apartment 4B opened, Anna stood at the threshold. Behind her, the small but neatly arranged living room housed a wooden crib where Ethan and Noah were already sleeping soundly.

“Anna, I...” Max began, but the sharp, unwavering lift of her hand instantly froze him in his tracks at the doorway.

“Five million dollars to my school? A state-of-the-art laboratory named after me?” Anna let out a sharp laugh filled with profound disdain and bitterness. “Max, what exactly do you think your money can buy back? Can it buy back the nights I spent entirely alone in the emergency room, going into premature labor from sheer physical exhaustion? Or the days I skipped meals just to afford diapers for my boys?”

“I had absolutely no idea they existed! I was systematically framed, Anna!” Max’s voice cracked, the powerful billionaire falling to his knees on the wooden floor right in front of his ex-wife. “My mother and Pace... they forged the data. I’ve uncovered everything. I’m going to make them pay for what they did.”

“I don’t give a damn about who framed whom, Max!” Anna raised her voice, though she quickly hushed herself, mindful of her sleeping sons as tears finally spilled over. “What sickens me the most is that you never believed in me. A single naphthalenic folder from an anonymous source, and you were ready to throw away three years of marriage. You loved your concrete empire more than anything else in this world.”

She leaned down, forcing him to look directly into her fierce eyes: “Do you want to know why I said you have absolutely no idea what you’ve done? The Greystone acquisition contract worth 200 million dollars that you are scheduled to sign with Reginald Pace tomorrow morning... Do you have any clue who holds the core legal property rights to that land?”

Max raised his head, his eyes clouded with sudden, agonizing confusion.

“It was my grandfather,” Anna ginned, her tensed jaw tightening. “Before he passed away, he left the entire deed of that territory to me under my mother’s maiden name. For four years, Pace has tried to threaten, manipulate, and force me to sign it over, but I refused. So, he forged my signature to create the venture with you. He knew you were the only man with enough liquidity to swallow the project whole.”

Max felt his entire world crumble beneath him. The landmark contract he considered the pinnacle of his career, the very deal that would have crowned him the undisputed king of Illinois real estate, was an illegal, fraudulent trap built entirely on the exploitation and ruin of his own wife and sons. If he had signed it tomorrow, Whitmore Global would have faced the most catastrophic criminal indictment in history, and the person putting him behind bars would have been Anna.

“Do you understand now, Max?” Anna wiped her cheeks, her voice returning to a chillingly flat, tensed finality. “You were seconds away from executing a deal that would have stripped your own sons of their rightful heritage, all to enrich the very man who destroyed your family.”

Max stood up. The lingering fear within him vanished, replaced by the iron-clad resolve of a father who had finally found his true purpose. He looked toward the bedroom where Ethan and Noah were breathing softly in the dark.

"I’m not signing, Anna," Max spoke, his voice carrying a tensed, lethal calm that he had never possessed before. "And I am going to ensure that every single person who ever brought harm to you and my boys vanishes completely from this city."

The following morning, at the strategic signing ceremony broadcasted live in front of hundreds of journalists and high-profile investors, Reginald Pace flashed a triumphant grin, sliding the fountain pen toward Max. My mother, Margaret Harrison, sat in the very front row, smiling with absolute smugness.

Max stepped up to the podium. He didn't pick up the pen. Instead, he locked his eyes directly onto the camera lenses:

"I stand before you to announce that the Harrison Group is officially canceling the Greystone project effective immediately. Furthermore, we are filing a formal multi-million-dollar criminal lawsuit against Reginald Pace and Mrs. Margaret Harrison for corporate fraud, forgery, and conspiracy to unlawfully seize assets belonging to Miss Emma Parker and my two legal heirs."

The entire auditorium erupted into absolute chaos. Camera flashes strobed frantically. Reginald Pace collapsed into his chair, his jaw hanging open, while Margaret dropped her luxury handbag, her face contorting in sheer, unadulterated terror.

Max stepped down from the stage, tearing off his expensive suit jacket and tossing it onto the floor of the corporate arena. He walked straight through the exit doors, stepped into his vehicle, and drove directly toward the West Side. The king of the concrete empire had shattered his own throne with his own hands, because he finally knew that a small apartment was waiting for him—where he would finally learn how to be a real, ordinary man for the sons who bore his name.
