PART 1: THE LIQUIDATION

The ambulance drove away into the blizzard, its red lights staining the snow.

Inside the grand house, the heat was suffocating.

My father, Richard, stood by the roaring fireplace, swirling his scotch.

“You look tired, Daniel,” he said, not looking at me. “Go to a hotel. Tomorrow, we’ll talk about your allowance.”

“Allowance?” I asked, my voice flat.

My mother, Evelyn, adjusted her diamond earrings. “Be grateful, Daniel. Your little wife was a gold-digger. She wanted the Sterling name. We just protected you.”

I didn't answer. I sat at the mahogany dining table and opened my military-grade laptop.

I connected to the secure satellite VPN I used in the field.

“What are you doing?” Richard asked, his smile finally faltering. “Put that away.”

“Eighteen months ago, before I deployed, you asked me to sign a power of attorney,” I said, my fingers flying across the keyboard. “You said it was to manage my grandfather’s trust while I was in the sandbox.”

Richard chuckled. “And it was. It allowed me to absorb your assets into the family firm. Perfectly legal.”

“Except you forgot one thing, Dad,” I said, looking up. “Grandfather didn't leave the trust to the family firm. He left the entire holding company to me. You were just the trustee until my twenty-fifth birthday.”

Richard’s face grew pale. “What are you talking about?”

“My birthday was three months ago,” I said. “While I was tracking insurgents, I had the Army JAG lawyers review the paperwork. The moment I turned twenty-five, your trustee status expired.”

I pressed Enter.

A loud chime echoed from Richard’s phone on the mantle. Then another. And another.

He snatched the phone. His eyes went wide as he stared at the screen.

“What is this?” he gasped. “Corporate accounts… frozen? The offshore accounts in the Caymans… locked?”

“I just revoked your access to every corporate entity,” I said, standing up. “As of thirty seconds ago, you don't own the Sterling Group. I do. And I’m liquidating your personal accounts to cover the theft of my deployment pay.”

Evelyn dropped her wine glass. It shattered on the marble floor, a pool of dark red spreading like blood.

“Daniel, stop this madness!” she shrieked.

“I told you,” I said, packing my laptop. “You threw out my whole world. Now I’m taking back everything.”

Suddenly, Richard lunged at me, his face twisted in a mask of pure rage.
