Part 3: The Verdict

The illusion of the perfect high-society wedding was entirely gone, replaced by the raw, exposing light of a corporate execution. The guests in the front rows—many of them major shareholders in my family's firm—were already on their phones, frantically instructing their brokers to liquidate their positions before the markets opened on Monday.
Evan looked around the room, realizing that his pristine reputation, his legal standing, and his access to the Carter fortune had vanished in less than two minutes. The calculated arrogance in his eyes turned into a desperate, feral panic.
"You think you can just walk away from this, Claire?" Evan hissed, stepping onto the stage, his voice dropping below the microphone’s pick-up range. "The contracts are already processed through the Zapopan notary server. The digital signatures are valid. By tomorrow morning, the holding company belongs to me, whether you stay in this marriage or not."
"They would be valid, Evan," I said, a cold, victorious smile finally touching my lips as I reached behind the podium and pulled out my smartphone, showing him a live, encrypted transmission screen. "If I hadn't filed a temporary administrative freeze on the entire estate registry at 2:00 this afternoon."
Evan froze, his jaw loosening as his eyes locked onto the federal seal displayed on my phone.
"I've been tracking your corporate access logs for three weeks, Peter," I said, turning my gaze to my brother, who looked as though he had just been hit by a physical blow. "I knew you were draining the construction accounts. I knew you brought Evan into my life to play the role of the perfect, supportive partner just to get my signature. I let this wedding happen because I needed both of you in the same room, in front of every single one of our primary investors, when the federal warrants were served."
Right on cue, the grand double doors of the Plaza ballroom were pushed open. Four uniform officers from the New York Police Department walked down the center aisle, their boots clicking firmly against the polished wood floor. Behind them walked my personal corporate attorney, holding a stack of freshly signed asset-protection orders.
"Evan Vance, Peter Bennett, you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and identity theft," the lead officer announced, stepping onto the stage and grabbing Evan’s arm, forcing his hands behind his back.
The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed clearly over the silent tables. Peter didn't even fight; he simply closed his eyes, his shoulders slumping in complete defeat as an officer escorted him down the stairs past his wealthy peers.

The guests stood in stunned, breathless silence as the two men were led out of the ballroom, their futures entirely erased before the wedding cake could even be cut.
I turned off the microphone, setting it gently back onto the stand. I walked down the stage stairs, stepping back into the warm, safe light where Sophie was waiting, holding her little white shoe in her hand. I scooped her up into my arms, wrapping the long lace of my wedding dress around her shoulders, knowing that the ghost of the past had finally been laid to rest—and we were finally, truly free.
