Plot twist

Part 2: The Freezing of the Empire

The courtroom exploded into absolute chaos.

My attorney gasped, his legal notepad slipping from his hands and scattering across the floor.

Vanessa’s satisfied smile didn't just fade; it disintegrated into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror as she scrambled backward into her chair.

— That’s a lie! Vanessa shrieked, her designer cream blazer suddenly looking like a straightjacket as she looked at the spectators. She’s a child! She doesn't know what she's saying! She’s mentally unstable, just like her mother was!

Judge Thornton brought her heavy wooden gavel down three times with a force that sounded like gunshots.

— SILENCE! the judge roared, her eyes blazing with an icy, lethal fury behind her reading glasses. Silence in this court, or I will have the bailiffs clear the room by force!

The gallery went dead quiet, the air turning to liquid nitrogen.

Julian stood frozen beside his table, his hands trembling so violently he had to press his palms flat against the mahogany wood to keep his balance.

He looked at his daughter, then at me, the arrogant businessman completely replaced by a cornered animal realizing the trap had just snapped shut.

— Bailiff, Judge Thornton ordered, her voice dropping into a register that signaled the end of Julian’s world. Secure the child immediately. Bring her to my private chambers with a child psychologist. No one touches her. No one speaks to her.

She turned her gaze down toward Julian’s legal team, her expression entirely devoid of human mercy.

— Furthermore, under the emergency statutes of federal conspiracy and attempted murder, I am issuing an immediate, total asset freeze on all accounts matching the names Julian Cross, Cross Logistics, and Vanessa Vance.

Vanessa let out a sharp, strangled gasp, her hands flying to her throat.

— Your Honor, you can't do that! My family’s foundation—

— Your family’s foundation is currently under the jurisdiction of a criminal investigation, Ms. Vance, Judge Thornton interrupted, her voice cutting through the room like steel. You are forbidden from leaving the state of Massachusetts. Your passports will be surrendered to the marshal’s office by noon today.

My attorney leaned close to my ear, his voice trembling with a sudden, intense adrenaline.

— Clara... the brake failure on your SUV last month. The accident that put you in the hospital for two weeks...

I couldn't answer him.

I looked at the stuffed rabbit Lily had dropped on the floor in her panic.

The tattered toy was split open at the seam near the neck, and as I reached down to pick it up, something metallic caught the harsh courtroom light.

It wasn't stuffing inside the rabbit.

It was a small, black digital audio recorder, its red indicator light still blinking silently in the dark fabric.
