PART 2: THE ANATOMY OF AN AMBUSH

PART 2: THE ANATOMY OF AN AMBUSH
The quiet hum of the ballroom was shattered by the rhythmic, heavy footsteps of the federal agents advancing across the polished wood. The three-tier birthday cake, once a symbol of Maris’s untouchable social standing, now looked like an altar to her greed.
"Maris Williams?" the lead investigator asked, his voice completely devoid of the deference she had spent a lifetime demanding. "We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of grand larceny, interstate wire fraud, and the intentional exploitation of a dependent minor."
"Victor, make them stop!" Maris screamed, her manicured fingers clawing at the pearls around her neck as if they were choking her. "This is a public humiliation! I am your mother! Everything I did, I did to keep the Williams name pure! Catherine was a nobody from the Northside! She was dragging you down!"
Victor stood up slowly, lifting Annie into his arms, completely unbothered by the grease and dirt transferring onto his custom tailored jacket. He looked at his mother—really looked at her—and saw nothing but a parasitic predator hiding behind a mask of high-society etiquette.
"You didn't protect the family name, Mom," Victor said, his voice dropping into a quiet, terrifying register that silenced the remaining guests. "You stole one.point.eight million dollars from your own granddaughter over thirty-six months. You forced my wife into a rented room in the slums while she was battling a chronic illness, and you let my daughter eat leftovers from a garbage bag so you could pay the maintenance fees on your penthouse."
Brian Smith stepped beside Victor, handing him a leather briefcase. "Mr. Williams, the real paper trail isn't in the trust fund. It's in the secondary corporate registry for Williams Holdings. Your mother used your digital signature tokens to leverage the Silverspring development project against a hard-money loan. She didn't just steal the alimony; she embezzled thirty million from the commercial accounts."
Maris collapsed backward against the cake table, knocking over a display of white orchids. Her defense attorneys, who had been drinking her expensive champagne moments before, quietly stepped into the shadows of the corridor, pulling out their phones to draft their resignation letters.
"Get her out of my sight," Victor told the agents, turning his back on her completely. He looked down at Annie, whose big eyes were wide with a mixture of confusion and sudden hope. "Where is Mommy right now, sweetheart?"

"She's at the clinic on 4th Street," Annie whispered, her voice cracking. "She was too weak to walk today."
"Ryan, bring the armored SUV around," Victor commanded his security chief. "The party's over."
