PART 3: THE DEBT OF GRATITUDE

Victoria’s bouquet of white roses slipped entirely from her fingers, hitting the marble floor with a dull thud. The pristine illusion of the fairytale wedding was entirely shattered.

"Get them out of here," Nathan ordered, not even looking at Victoria as she was quietly surrounded by his private security detail. The murmurs of the guests swelled into a roaring sea of scandal as the Reynolds family was swiftly and silently escorted out through the service exits of the ballroom.

Nathan turned his back on the altar, completely ignoring the minister and the lavish decorations. He looked down at Emma, who was watching him with wide, curious eyes.

"Come on, Emma," Nathan said, offering his hand to the little girl. "We have someone important to take care of."

Thirty minutes later, Nathan’s armored Maybach was speeding through the rain toward his Westchester estate. He had stripped off his tuxedo jacket and bow tie, sitting in his white dress shirt next to Emma, who was happily drinking a carton of apple juice provided by the driver.

When they arrived at the estate, Nathan didn't head toward his violated study or check the security perimeter. He walked straight down the long, covered walkway leading to the independent staff quarters at the back of the property. He knocked gently on the door of the small apartment before opening it.

Lucy Turner was sitting on the edge of her small bed, a thin blanket wrapped around her shoulders, her face pale and exhausted from her battle with lupus. When she saw Nathan stand in her doorway holding her daughter’s hand, she instantly panicked, trying to stand up. "Mr. Blake! I am so sorry... I didn't know Emma left the grounds. Please don't fire me, sir, she didn't mean to bother you—"

"Lucy, stop," Nathan said gently, stepping into the modest room and placing a hand on her shoulder to guide her back to the bed. "You have absolutely nothing to apologize for. Your daughter didn't bother me. She just saved my life."

He sat down on a wooden chair opposite her, looking around the small, immaculate space. For years, he had considered himself a generous employer simply because he allowed Lucy to live on the property and let Emma play in his study. Now, looking at the medicine bottles lined up on the counter, he realized how blind his wealth had made him.

"Marcus has already contacted the chief of rheumatology at Columbia Medical Center," Nathan said, his voice level but absolute. "A private transport will be here tomorrow morning to move you to a specialized care facility. Your medical expenses, your recovery, and Emma’s education... everything is taken care of. Permanently."

Lucy’s eyes filled with tears, her hands trembling against her blanket. "Mr. Blake... I don't know what to say. We haven't done anything to deserve this."

"Emma did," Nathan said, looking over at the little girl who was currently arranging her crayons on the small kitchen table. "She crossed the city alone to protect a man who barely noticed her. She showed me what real loyalty looks like."

He stood up, walking over to the window that looked out over his sprawling, expensive estate. The empire of Blake Enterprises was secure, the fraudulent contracts would be dismantled by his legal team before the markets opened on Monday, and the people who tried to trap him would face federal fraud charges.

But as Nathan watched Emma laugh as she drew a bright yellow sun on her paper, he realized that the most valuable asset he owned wasn't listed on his balance sheet. It was the fierce, unyielding protection of a little girl who refused to let bad people win. The false kingdom he had almost married into had collapsed into dust, but his real family—built on gratitude, truth, and genuine care—had just officially begun.
