Part 2: The Hidden Record

The blade of light beneath the door vanished just as slowly as it had appeared, plunging the master bedroom back into an suffocating, pitch-black silence. My heart slammed violently against my ribs, but I forced my body to remain perfectly still, my fingers locked in Lucía’s icy grip. Beside us, Esteban’s breathing never broke its rhythm. It was a flawless performance—the same calm, steady facade he had used for years to gaslight me into believing I was the paranoid one.

When the digital clock on the nightstand finally clicked to 5:30 AM, the soft gray light of dawn began to bleed through the window curtains. The moment Esteban shifted to face the wall, Lucía subtly released my hand, slipped out from beneath the navy quilt, and glided out of the room without making a single sound.

I waited exactly ten minutes before following her. I didn’t find her in the kitchen or the living room. Instead, I found her standing inside the dark hallway of the guest wing, her hands trembling violently against her red silk gown as she stared out the window at the empty driveway.

"He knows you're awake," Lucía whispered, her voice cracking into a ragged, desperate undertone as I approached. "He's known every single night, Valeria. The click you heard... that was the safety mechanism of his service weapon. He keeps it taped under the structural frame of his side of the headboard."

A cold sweat broke out along my neck. Esteban was a high-ranking internal affairs detective for the state police—a man who spent his days auditing corruption and his nights mapping out the perfect, untraceable disposal of human lives.

"Why didn't you tell Tomás?" I asked, my voice dropping into an intense, urgent whisper. "Why haven't you gone to the precinct?"

"Because your brother is the one he’s leveraging," Lucía said, turning her head slowly, her sea-glass eyes wide with a profound, survivalist terror. She pulled back the strap of her red gown, revealing a sickening ring of dark purple fingerprints circling her collarbone. "Tomás didn't move here because he wanted to stay with family. He came because Esteban uncovered a falsified real estate ledger from Tomás's accounting firm. Esteban told me that if I didn't cooperate, if I didn't provide him with the 'domestic proximity' he wanted while you were asleep, he would execute the arrest warrant and ensure your brother died in a state holding facility."

The pieces of the seventeenth-night puzzle locked into an un-audited, terrifying framework. Lucía wasn't trying to steal my husband; she was using my physical presence in that bed as a structural shield. Esteban couldn't touch her or slide his hands across the sheets without risking waking me up and shattering his pristine, protective identity as a loyal spouse.

"He thinks he has the administrative keys to both of our silences," I said, my initial terror suddenly hardening into an icy, calculated focus. "He thinks because he controls the legal filing system, we are just assets he can liquidate. He forgets that before I married him, I ran the digital compliance network for the district attorney's office."
