PART 1: THE SILENT TRAP

Margaret’s hand was still pressed hard against my shoulder, pinning me against the wall.
Her eyes were cold, calculating, and completely void of empathy.
"The PIN, Ava," she repeated, her voice dripping with venom.
"Don't make me ask again."
I could see Ethan standing by the door, his arms crossed over his chest.
He wasn't moving.
He wasn't intervening.
He was watching me with an expression of cold expectation.
"You're making this difficult for everyone," Ethan said, his voice flat.
"Just give her the card."
My heart was racing, but a strange, icy calm began to settle in my chest.
I looked at Margaret, then over at Ethan.
The man I had loved, the man who had promised to protect me and our child, was literally standing between me and my freedom.
"You really think you're going to get away with this?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Margaret laughed, a short, sharp sound.
"Get away with what? Helping you pay for your own wedding?"
"You're being hysterical."
"And honestly, you're lucky we're even letting you contribute."
She pressed harder against my chest, forcing me to gasp.
"Give me the card."
I felt the panic rising again, but I shoved it down.
I thought about the hours I spent at my desk, the sleepless nights building my agency, the sacrifices I had made to ensure my child would have a future.
I wasn't going to let them take it.

I wasn't going to let them destroy me.
I looked at Margaret, and for the first time, I didn't see the woman who had welcomed me into her home.
I saw a predator.
And I knew I had to fight back.
I shifted my weight, trying to find my footing.
My hands were still protectively covering my stomach.
"You want the card?" I asked, my voice suddenly steady.
"Fine."
Margaret’s face lit up with a greedy, triumphant smile.
"Smart girl."
She reached out, her hand outstretched.
I slowly lifted my right leg, and instead of handing her the card, I drove my heel into her instep with all the strength I could muster.
Margaret screamed, letting go of me instantly.
She stumbled back, clutching her foot.
Ethan rushed forward, his face twisting in rage.
"You little—"
I didn't wait for him to finish.
I lunged for the deadbolt.
My fingers gripped the brass knob and I threw it open.
I didn't look back.
I burst out the front door and into the cool evening air.
I didn't know where I was going, or what would happen next.
But I was free.

Or so I thought.
As I reached my car, I heard the engine of Ethan's truck roar to life behind me.
