Part 3: The Cold Order of Battle

The revelation struck the party like an artillery shell. Natalie dropped to her knees on the stage, her orange dress pooling around her as she buried her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. The victory she had announced to the crowd just five minutes ago had turned into a public execution of her dignity.
Eric finally found his feet, stumbling up the stage steps toward me. "Maddie, look... the business is safe. I did it for us! I did it to protect our assets from Julian's embezzlement! I never loved her, I swear to you! It was just a game to save the firm!"
"You used my sister, Eric," I said, turning to him with an icy glare that made him stop in his tracks. "And you used my marriage as a shield for your dirty corporate wars. You thought because I retired from the military, I forgot how to execute an operation. But I didn't just hire a private investigator for a divorce."
I looked over at Grant Miller, who nodded and pulled a secondary set of documents from the red folder.
"Two hours ago, the federal district attorney's office received a fully decrypted digital ledger of both your firm's offshore accounts and Julian's embezzlement files," I stated clearly into the microphone. "Every Saturday 'emergency meeting,' every 'business trip' to Asheville—it's all documented. You aren't just losing your wife today, Eric. You and Julian are losing your freedom."
Right on cue, the heavy iron gates of the resort estate clicked open. Four federal agents in dark suits strode across the pristine green lawn, moving with a synchronized, professional speed. The wealthy guests scrambled out of the way, knocking over champagne flutes as the agents bypassed the tables and stepped up to the stage.
"Eric Carter and Julian Vance," the lead agent announced, pulling out pairs of stainless-steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate racketeering, and illegal surveillance."
Eric reached out for my hand, his face completely broken. "Maddie, please! Ten years! We built this together!"
"We built a lie, Eric," I said, stepping back to let the agent secure the cuffs around his wrists. "And now, I'm dismantling it."
As the agents led both Eric and a silent, ruined Julian away past the whispering crowd, I walked down the stage steps. I stopped by my parents' table. My mother was still staring at the shattered glass on the floor, but my father looked up at me, his eyes full of a quiet, deep respect for the daughter he had raised.

I picked up a clean napkin, wiped a stray drop of wine from my emerald-green dress, and looked out over the ocean as the last rays of the sun disappeared below the horizon. Natalie was still weeping on the stage, completely abandoned by both men she had tried to use.
They thought they could turn my tenth anniversary into a circus. But in the end, they had simply walked straight into the firing line of a woman who never enters a battle until she knows exactly how it ends.
