Part 2: The Fall of House King

The dust hadn't even settled before the black boots stepped over the ruins of our front door.
Four men in tactical gear entered first, their movements silent, synchronized, and terrifyingly professional.
They didn't carry police badges.
They carried the emblem of Vance Global Security.
Behind them walked my father.
Arthur Vance didn't wear a tactical vest. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, his grey hair combed perfectly back, his hands resting casually inside his pockets.
He looked like he was walking into a boardroom, not a crime scene.
His eyes swept the room, bypassing David entirely, bypassing Margaret, until they landed on me.
Seeing me on the floor, my leg twisted at an unnatural angle, his jaw tightened.
That was the only sign of his rage.
— Secure the child, my father ordered.
One of the men immediately scooped Emma into his arms, shielding her face as he carried her out past the broken door.
— Arthur! Margaret shrieked, backing away until she was pressed against the refrigerator. This is home invasion! I will call the authorities!
My father finally looked at her.
— Margaret, he said softly. The chief of police is currently sitting in my office drinking my scotch. Who exactly do you think is going to answer your call?
David tried to back up toward the back door, his hands shaking as he hid them behind his back.
— Arthur, please, David whispered, the arrogance completely gone. It was an accident. We had an argument about the accounts, she swung at me, and she slipped. Ask Margaret!
Margaret nodded frantically.
— Yes! She’s always been clumsy, Arthur! You know how fragile Sarah is!
My father walked over to the kitchen island, picked up my phone, and looked at the glowing screen showing the First Meridian Bank transfer.
— Twenty-two million dollars, my father murmured, reading the text. My late wife’s inheritance to Sarah. Transferred to an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under the name King Holdings.
He looked up at David.
— Did you really think I wouldn't track it?
— It’s our marital property! David yelled, trying to find his courage. The law says—
— I don’t care about the law, David, my father interrupted, stepping closer until he was inches away from him. The law takes too long. I prefer immediate results.
My father raised his left hand.
The two guards behind David moved instantly.

They grabbed David’s arms, forcing him to his knees on the hard marble floor.
— Let go of me! David screamed, kicking wildly.
My father looked down at him, his face completely devoid of mercy.
— You liked using your hands on my daughter, Arthur said, his voice dropping to a whisper. Let’s see how you like it when the playing field is level.
He nodded to the guard on the left.
The guard didn't hesitate. He brought his heavy combat boot down directly onto David’s right knee.
The sound of shattering bone echoed through the high-ceilinged kitchen.
David let out a high-pitched, strangled shriek, his body convulsing as he collapsed onto the floor, clutching his ruined leg, weeping into the marble.
Margaret screamed, dropping her wineglass, falling to her knees in pure terror.
My father didn't even blink. He walked over to me, kneeling down carefully so he wouldn't touch my broken leg.
— I’m sorry I was late, sweetheart, he whispered, his eyes filled with a deep, quiet pain.
May you like
— Dad, I gasped, the adrenaline finally fading, leaving only the crushing weight of the physical pain.
— Shh, he said, lifting me gently into his arms. It’s over. I’m taking you to the hospital. But as for them... their nightmare is just beginning.
