Part 2: The Shadows of West Virginia

The revelation hung in the dim, warm light of the bedroom like a sudden frost. I stared at the deep, painful marks on Emily's shoulder, my mind spinning as the piece of the puzzle she had hidden from the world finally forced its way into the light. The rumors my mother had weaponized, the mocking jests of my elite social circle—all of it was exposed as a grotesque distortion of a young woman's survival.
"Your siblings?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper as I reached out, my fingers hovering just inches away from her skin, terrified to cause her any more pain. "Emily... who did this to you?"
Emily pulled the satin robe back over her shoulder, shielding the scars once more as she sank onto the edge of the velvet mattress. She stared at her bare feet, her breathing uneven.
"My father," she began, the word tasting like poison on her tongue. "He wasn't a man, Nathan. He was a monster fueled by cheap whiskey and a rage that never slept. When my mother passed away ten years ago, he looked at my little brothers, Johnny and Paul, and my baby sister, Lily, and saw nothing but targets. I was fifteen when I realized that if I didn't stand between him and those kids, they wouldn't make it to their tenth birthdays."
She swallowed hard, a trembling hand wiping away a stray tear. "Those marks on my shoulder... that was the night he tried to take a broken iron poker to Johnny because he dropped a plate. I threw myself over my brother. I took the blow, and I took the glass that followed. The next morning, I stole his truck, loaded the kids into the back, and drove until the fuel ran out at a sanctuary home in Ohio."
My fists clenched so tightly at my sides that my knuckles turned white under my formal cuffs. The pristine, sheltered world of my Greenwich inheritance felt sickeningly small compared to the war my wife had fought alone.
"The money," I realized, the timeline clicking together in my mind. "The salary you sent home month after month..."
"It went to the private foster sanctuary in Ohio to pay for their boarding, their schooling, and their medical care," Emily said, looking up at me with a fierce, protective light in her eyes. "I let the staff here think whatever they wanted. I let them call me a loose woman. I let them believe I had three different baby daddies. If people thought I was just a scandalous, irresponsible girl from the hills, they wouldn't look any closer. They wouldn't dig into my past. They wouldn't find out where the children were hidden."
She paused, her gaze dropping to the heavy diamond ring on her finger. "But three days ago, before our wedding... my father was released from the state penitentiary on early parole. He's been looking for us, Nathan. He tracked my bank wire transfers back to a corporate account associated with Carter Global. He knows I'm here."

Before I could process the terror of her words, a sudden, heavy vibration shook the nightstand. Emily's old, cracked smartphone lit up in the darkness. It was an unknown number from a West Virginia area code.
I picked up the phone, sliding the screen open before Emily could stop me. A single text message filled the display: Found you, Emmy. Tell your rich boss husband that a family reunion is going to cost him exactly five million dollars, or the kids don't make it through the week.
