Plot twist

Part 2: The House That Was Never Ours

Ethan's scream ripped through the mansion.

"Daddy, don't let him give you the shot!"

Every instinct I had took over.

I shoved Dr. Lawrence's wrist aside just as he lunged forward.

The syringe slipped from his fingers.

It shattered across the marble floor.

Clear liquid splashed over the polished tiles.

For a split second, no one moved.

Vivian was the first to break the silence.

Her perfect smile vanished.

"Daniel!"

she shouted.

"What are you doing?"

I stepped backward.

"What am I doing?"

I stared at the broken syringe.

"I think the better question is—what were you planning to inject me with?"

Dr. Lawrence quickly recovered his composure.

"It was only a mild sedative."

"I didn't ask you."

I looked at Vivian.

"When exactly did I agree to having a psychiatrist walk into my house with a needle?"

She folded her arms.

"You've been under enormous stress."

"I've been worried about you."

"No."

I answered quietly.

"You've been planning something."

For the first time in twelve years of marriage, I watched uncertainty flash across her face.

Only for a moment.

Then she smiled again.

The smile that suddenly didn't look beautiful anymore.

It looked practiced.

"Daniel."

she said gently.

"You're overreacting."

Before I could answer, Caleb came running down the staircase.

He threw himself against my leg.

His entire body was shaking.

"Ethan says we have to leave."

"Now."

I looked upstairs.

"Where's your brother?"

Caleb pointed toward the second floor.

"He's getting the box."

"What box?"

"The one Maya hid."

My pulse quickened.

"Maya hid something?"

Caleb nodded frantically.

"In our room."

"She said only to give it to you if she disappeared."

Vivian heard every word.

Her eyes widened.

"Caleb."

she said sharply.

"What box?"

The little boy instantly hid behind me.

He didn't answer.

Vivian took one step forward.

"Sweetheart."

"I'm talking to you."

Another voice interrupted her.

"He doesn't have to answer."

Ethan appeared at the top of the staircase.

In his hands was an old blue metal lunchbox covered in faded dinosaur stickers.

I recognized it immediately.

I'd bought it for his first day of kindergarten.

It was supposed to have been lost months ago.

"Ethan."

Vivian's voice became unusually firm.

"Bring that to me."

"No."

He hugged the box tighter.

"It belongs to Daddy."

Dr. Lawrence quietly moved toward the staircase.

I noticed.

"So that's why you're here."

I said.

"Not for me."

"The box."

Neither of them denied it.

That told me everything.

I started climbing the stairs.

Vivian suddenly shouted,

"Stop him!"

Dr. Lawrence grabbed my arm.

Years of working long hospital shifts had never made me a fighter, but adrenaline is a remarkable thing.

I drove my shoulder into his chest.

He stumbled backward into the hallway table.

A crystal vase crashed to the floor.

I reached Ethan just as Vivian did.

She grabbed one side of the lunchbox.

I grabbed the other.

For one awful second, we stood there pulling against each other while my sons cried.

"Let go."

Vivian hissed.

"No."

"It's family property."

"It belongs to Maya."

That sentence slipped out before she realized what she'd said.

I stared at her.

"You knew."

She froze.

"You knew Maya hid it."

Her silence answered for her.

I yanked the lunchbox free.

Vivian lunged again.

Too late.

I opened it.

Inside...

There wasn't money.

There weren't stolen jewels.

There wasn't anything valuable.

Just three ordinary objects.

A USB flash drive.

A small digital voice recorder.

And an envelope with my name written across the front.

Daniel.

My hands suddenly felt numb.

Vivian whispered,

"No..."

I tore open the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Daniel,

If you're reading this, I've probably already been arrested.

That means Vivian found out I was collecting evidence.

Please don't let the boys blame themselves.

None of this is their fault.

They've been trying to protect you for almost a year.

A year?

I continued reading.

You think I became their nanny because I needed a job.

I didn't.

Someone hired me to watch over Ethan and Caleb after their previous nanny disappeared without warning.

At first, I thought it was just an ordinary wealthy family with marriage problems.

I was wrong.

Vivian has been secretly giving you medication in your nightly vitamin drinks.

That's why your memory has become unreliable.

That's why you've forgotten conversations.

Appointments.

Even entire weekends.

She tells everyone you're under too much stress.

You're not.

You're being drugged.

I stopped reading.

My legs almost gave out beneath me.

Every forgotten anniversary.

Every missing receipt.

Every blank space in my memory.

I had blamed myself.

Vivian quietly took another step backward.

"Daniel..."

"It's a lie."

I looked at her.

"Is it?"

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I picked up the voice recorder.

Pressed play.

Static.

Then Maya's voice.

"If anything happens to me, this recording must reach Daniel."

A door closed in the background.

Then another voice.

Vivian.

Cold.

Calm.

Very different from the woman I thought I knew.

"Increase his dosage."

My heartbeat stopped.

A man's voice answered.

"He's starting to ask questions."

Vivian replied,

"Then make him forget faster."

The recording continued.

"And the boys?"

asked the man.

Vivian laughed softly.

"Children remember less than adults."

"Eventually they'll believe whatever I tell them."

The recording ended.

Silence swallowed the hallway.

Neither twin was crying anymore.

They simply stared at their mother.

Like they had been waiting months for me to finally hear the truth.

Vivian slowly smiled.

Not the gentle smile she showed charity boards.

Not the elegant smile she wore at galas.

Something colder.

"You finally know."

she said quietly.

I could barely speak.

"Why?"

She tilted her head.

"Because this house..."

She looked around the grand staircase.

"...was never supposed to belong to you."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

She laughed.

"You still don't remember."

My stomach tightened.

"Remember what?"

She looked directly into my eyes.

"The car crash."

My mind went blank.

"What car crash?"

Vivian's smile widened.

"The one that killed your older brother."

Every drop of blood drained from my face.

I had never had a brother.

At least...

That's what I had believed my entire life.

Vivian took another slow step toward me.

"The medication worked better than I expected."

She almost sounded impressed.

"You don't even remember that this mansion..."

She glanced at the twins.

"...was inherited by someone else."

Before I could ask another question—

The front door exploded inward with a deafening crash.

Armed federal agents flooded into the foyer.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation!"

"No one move!"

Vivian didn't scream.

She didn't run.

She simply looked at me...

...and whispered one sentence that shattered everything I thought I knew.

May you like

"I'm not your wife, Daniel."

"I'm your brother's widow."
