Part 1: The Wrong Man

I came home after months of service expecting to embrace my wife, but she stepped away from me as if I were the enemy.

That night, I pulled back the blanket, thinking I would uncover a betrayal… but instead I found her body covered in bruises.

“If you touch her again without permission, I swear you'll regret coming back alive.”

Ricardo threw those words across the kitchen while wearing my military jacket and my watch on his wrist, as if my house, my wife, and even my identity now belonged to him.

Captain Alejandro Ríos had just returned to Guadalajara after six months on deployment overseas.

Inside his luggage was a medal, dust from countless airports still clinging to his boots, and one image burned into his heart: Elena running toward him, throwing her arms around him at the front door, crying tears of joy.

But Elena didn’t run.

She stood beside the kitchen sink wearing an oversized sweater, her hair hastily tied back, her hands hidden inside the sleeves.

When Alejandro stepped inside, she looked up at him as though she had heard the footsteps of an enemy.

“Welcome home, Alejandro,” she said.

Alejandro.

Not “my love.”

Not “I missed you.”

Not “thank God you're back.”

His mother, Victoria, appeared behind her wearing a new pearl necklace and the perfect smile she always reserved for guests.

“Don’t pressure her, son.”

“Elena has been very sensitive since you left.”

Ricardo leaned against the marble counter and laughed.

“Loneliness does strange things to women.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

Alejandro wanted to step closer, but she moved back half a step.

It was a tiny movement.

Almost invisible.

But he had learned to recognize fear in places where a single movement could mean the difference between life and death.

That night, in the bedroom that once smelled of coffee, lavender, and promises, Elena lay on the very edge of the bed.

She pulled the blanket all the way to her neck.

Her entire body was rigid.

Alejandro reached out to touch her fingers.

Elena flinched so violently that she nearly fell from the bed.

Something inside him shattered.

“Is there someone else?” he asked quietly, hating himself the instant the words left his mouth.

Elena closed her eyes.

Her lips trembled, but she said nothing.

The next day, Alejandro found Elena’s old phone hidden inside a box of medication.

The battery was nearly dead, but it still powered on.

Inside were partially deleted messages, photographs of documents, appointments with a notary in Zapopan, and enormous transfers sent to an unfamiliar company called Inversiones Mercurio del Bajío.

Ricardo’s name appeared as the administrator.

The family home.

The construction company accounts that Alejandro and Elena had built from nothing.

The land he had purchased before joining the military.

Everything had been transferred.

And on many of the documents was Elena’s signature.

Alejandro’s signature was there too.

But Alejandro had never signed anything.

That afternoon, while Victoria hosted a dinner for “important business partners” to celebrate the company’s new chapter, Alejandro watched his wife from the garden doorway.

Elena arranged flowers with trembling hands.

Ricardo leaned close and whispered something in her ear, and her face immediately turned pale.

That night, Alejandro locked the bedroom door.

“Elena,” he whispered.

“Look at me.”

She couldn’t.

Then he did something that hurt more than any wound he had ever suffered during service.

He carefully pulled back the blanket, searching for the truth he feared most.

He did not find infidelity.

He found bruises across Elena’s ribs, finger-shaped marks on her arms, fresh scars on her back, and a yellowing bruise near her collarbone.

Alejandro stopped breathing.

“Who did this to you?”

Elena covered her mouth to suppress a sob.

“Your mother and Ricardo forced me to sign everything.”

“They said if I spoke up, they would destroy you.”

From the garden below came the sound of Victoria laughing as she raised a glass of champagne.

Alejandro gently pulled the blanket back over Elena, handling her with the tenderness of a promise.

“So they didn’t just steal my wife,” he said in an icy voice.

“They declared war on the wrong man.”

And in that moment, Elena realized that the worst was still yet to come.
