PART 3: THE LEDGER LOGS

PART 3: THE LEDGER LOGS
By 1:00 p.m., the bright morning light had turned into a flat, overcast grey. Daniel sat in the back office of the hospital’s forensic compliance unit, the blue light of three monitors reflecting off his scrubs. Beside him sat Detective Marcus Hayes, a longtime acquaintance from the trauma unit's domestic response team.
On the screen was the digital printout of the creased paper Emma had hidden in her backpack. It wasn't a diary entry. It was a handwritten duplicate of a life insurance policy and a corporate trust account registered under Emma's biological father's name.
"The pink stain is a security seal chemical, Daniel," Detective Hayes said, pointing a finger at a highlighted string of financial data. "Four years ago, Emma's biological father died in a high-speed collision. The estate was locked into a restricted minority trust for Emma, valued at over two million dollars. The only way the trustee can access the principal before she turns eighteen is if the child is declared medically incapacitated or requires long-term specialized institutional care."
Daniel felt a sickening wave of clarity wash over him. "That's why she wanted the 'neurotic' narrative. That's why she kept calling her dramatic to the neighbors."
"Exactly," Hayes nodded. "Sarah’s business trip last week wasn't for a marketing firm. She was meeting with a private residential facility in upstate New York. She tried to use your signature on a medical proxy form to authorize a psychological evaluation for Emma."
"She used my digital signature from our marriage certificate registration," Daniel said, his knuckles turning white against the edge of the desk.

"We checked the IP address used to log into the trust vault last night," the detective continued, his expression grim. "It came from the Birch Street house while you were on your shift. Emma must have seen her mother forging the final signature. That's when Sarah grabbed her."
The door to the compliance office pushed open, and an auxiliary nurse stepped in, her face tight with concern. "Daniel, your wife is downstairs in the main lobby. She brought two private security guards and a legal representative from the family court. She’s demanding custody of Emma."
