PART 3: THE FORENSIC UNRAVELING

PART 3: THE FORENSIC UNRAVELING

The silence inside the laundry suite became absolute, broken only by the steady, heavy sound of the rain outside the small utility window.

Marcus tapped the screen of his phone. A high-definition video playback began to run, the bright glow reflecting off the white marble walls.

The footage wasn't from the laundry room. It was from the master suite walk-in closet, dated 7:14 a.m.—forty-five minutes before Vanessa had ever screamed.

The video clearly showed Vanessa standing in front of her private vanity, frantically attempting to iron the Valentino blazer herself while arguing on speakerphone with an unknown voice. On the audio, her voice was loud, sharp, and frantic.

"I don't care about the asset disclosure, Mother! If Marcus looks at the offshore shipping ledgers before the pre-nuptial agreement is finalized on Saturday, he will see the five-million-dollar deficit from the boutique collapse! I need him to sign the papers blind!"

In the video, as her frustration escalated, she left the iron resting flat against the cream wool of the lapel for exactly fourteen seconds while she paced across the rug. Smoke began to rise. When she realized what she had done, she panicked, ripped the iron away, and immediately looked up at the ceiling security node with a look of pure, calculated malice.

The video ended.

Vanessa stood frozen, her hand still resting on Marcus’s sleeve, her fingers trembling against his dark wool fabric. "Marcus... listen to me. That's... that's been manipulated. The tech staff must have altered the time stamps. I was trying to fix a wrinkle that Rosa left—"

"The tech staff didn't touch this file, Vanessa," Marcus said, stepping back until her hand fell away into empty space. "I built the security infrastructure for Hartwell Global myself. Every frame is watermarked with an unalterable blockchain key."

He looked over at Rosa, his expression softening into a deep, profound sense of shame. "Rosa, I apologize. For all of this. Mrs. Caldwell, please take Lily down to the kitchen sitting room and have the chef prepare whatever she wants."

Mrs. Caldwell stepped forward, a soft, triumphant smile touching her lips as she gently took Lily from Rosa’s arms. "Come along, mija. Gerald needs a cookie."

As the door closed behind them, Marcus turned back to Vanessa, his eyes turning into complete, unyielding ice.

"The wedding is off," he said softly.
