PART 2: THE EVALUATION TRAP

PART 2: THE EVALUATION TRAP
The drive to Dr. Aris Thorne’s clinic was suffocating.
Vanessa sat in the driver's seat of the luxury SUV, her hands relaxed on the steering wheel, humming softly to the radio.
In the back seat, Beatrice sat wearing an oversized, faded bathrobe, staring blankly out the window, her lips slightly parted as she pulled at a loose thread on her sleeve.
Liam sat in the passenger seat, his eyes fixed forward on the grey highway.
Every five minutes, Vanessa would cast a sympathetic, performative glance into the rearview mirror.
"Don't worry, Beatrice," Vanessa said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Dr. Thorne is going to help us find a place where you can rest. Somewhere secure."
Beatrice didn't respond; she simply let out a low, vacant murmur, perfectly playing the role Liam had asked of her.
When they arrived at the medical complex, the office smelled of expensive leather, white lilies, and expensive legal contracts.
Dr. Aris Thorne sat behind a massive glass desk, a fountain pen resting between his fingers. He had a tight, professional smile that never reached his eyes.
Vanessa immediately placed the manila folder on his desk, leaning forward. "Thank you for fitting us in, Doctor. As you can see from the behavioral logs I emailed you, her condition has degraded exponentially over the last forty-eight hours."
Dr. Thorne adjusted his glasses, looking over at Beatrice. "Mrs. Salvatore, do you know what day it is?"
Beatrice blinked slowly, turning to Liam with a completely blank expression. "Is this where the bus picks us up, Ethan?"
Vanessa suppressed a triumphant smile, turning to Dr. Thorne. "You see? She thinks Liam is her late brother. She knocked over the sugar bowl this morning and became entirely hostile."
Liam remained silent, watching the interaction with the cold precision of a fraud investigator.
He noticed the small, expensive gold cuff links on Dr. Thorne's wrists—the exact same limited-edition set he had seen on the corporate ledger Vanessa had accessed three days ago.
The "renowned psychiatrist" wasn't independent. He was on the payroll.
"Based on these reports and my initial observation," Dr. Thorne said, pulling the guardianship papers toward him, "I am prepared to execute the emergency declaration of mental incompetence. Liam, as the primary legal next-of-kin, I need your signature here to finalize Vanessa's co-guardianship."
Vanessa slid the silver fountain pen across the desk toward Liam, her eyes flashing with a sudden, sharp greed.
"Sign it, honey," she whispered. "Let's end her suffering."

Liam picked up the pen, rolling it between his fingers, his eyes locking onto Dr. Thorne.
"Before I sign, Doctor," Liam said, his voice entirely calm, "I think we should look at the secondary file."
