Plot twist

Part 3: The Unraveling of Puerta de Hierro

By the next morning, the private cubicle in the emergency wing had transformed into a legal war zone. Two detectives from the State Prosecutor's Office—colleagues I had worked with during my time as an auditor—stood by my bedside as Victor Hayes, the ruthless corporate defense attorney retained by Doña Beatriz, tried to block their access.

"My client's wife is heavily sedated and medically incompetent to give a coherent statement," Hayes argued, his polished voice echoing off the sterile walls. "Dr. Santillán is a respected public figure. This is an entirely private domestic matter that has been wildly blown out of proportion by hospital staff."

"The statement has already been recorded, counselor," Detective Ramirez replied, tapping his notepad. "And given the nature of the strangulation marks on her neck, this is a state-level felony investigation. Dr. Santillán isn't going anywhere."

Through the glass windows of the ICU, I watched Rodrigo pacing the hallway, his face entirely drained of color. His mother, Doña Beatriz, arrived shortly after, flanked by private security guards. She didn't look at the medical monitors keeping me stable; her cold, aristocratic eyes were fixed entirely on the detectives. She walked straight into my room, ignoring the nurse who tried to bar her entrance.

"Lucía," Doña Beatriz whispered, her voice dropping into a sharp, threatening hiss as she leaned over the bed rail. "Think very carefully about what you are doing. The Santillán family funds the very departments you are trying to invoke. If you drag our name through the dirt, you will leave this hospital with absolutely nothing. No money, no protection, and no future in this city."

I didn't flinch. I slowly reached up, unhooking the silver pendant from around my neck, and placed it directly into Detective Ramirez's open hand.

"The encryption password for the primary data file is the date of my wedding," I said clearly, my voice sounding stronger than it had in years. "Inside, you'll find the complete audit of the Santillán Foundation from 2022 to the present. It includes the routing numbers for the bribe payments sent to the legislative committee last month."

Doña Beatriz’s eyes widened in sheer horror. The cold, untouchable matriarch of Guadalajara high society suddenly looked frail, her manicured hand shaking as she realized the compliance she had beaten into me for four years had been a calculated trap.
