Plot twist

Part 2: The Ghost of MACV-SOG

The silence in the hospital room was so thick that the faint, rhythmic beep of my newborn’s heart monitor sounded like an echoing drum. Caleb looked between his father and Uncle Ray, his confusion rapidly morphing into defensive anger. He didn't understand why his father, a man who regularly bullied politicians and corporate boards, was currently trembling against the window sill.

"Dad? What’s wrong with you?" Caleb snapped, standing up from his chair to confront the old man. "It’s just her crazy uncle. Old man, you need to open that curtain right now and get the hell out of my wife’s room before I have hospital security throw you onto the pavement."

"Caleb, shut up! Shut your mouth right now!" Martin Price suddenly choked out, his voice a pathetic, high-pitched whisper that I had never heard before. He stepped away from the window, his hands shaking so violently he had to grip the back of Caleb’s chair to stay upright. "You don't know who that is. You have no idea what you've done."

Uncle Ray didn't look at Martin. He kept his eyes fixed entirely on Caleb. Without his hearing aids, Ray operated in a world of absolute stillness, but his focus was deadly. He took another step forward, his limp completely disappearing beneath a rigid, military posture that belonged to a man forty years younger.

"Thirty-five years ago, Martin," Ray said, his voice terrifyingly calm, low, and steady. "A young, ambitious contractor named Martin Price thought he could cut corners on a deep-water military logistics port in Cam Ranh. He siphoned off two million dollars in federal funds, used substandard steel, and caused a concrete collapse that buried three of my men alive under forty tons of rubble."

Caleb froze, his jaw dropping as he turned to look at his father. Martin couldn't even offer a denial; he simply pressed his back against the wall, tears of pure, unadulterated terror welling in his eyes.

"The military command wanted to sweep it under the rug to protect the defense contract," Ray continued, stepping directly into Caleb’s personal space. The contrast was staggering—my husband, dressed in his expensive maroon designer sweater, looked entirely insignificant against the scarred, hardened veteran in the green jacket. "But my unit didn't operate under the standard chain of command. We were MACV-SOG. We found the offshore accounts. We found the forged inspection documents. And I personally dragged your father out of his luxury hotel room in Saigon and made him dig out the bodies of my men with his bare hands before I handed him over to the federal marshals."

Ray shifted his gaze down to Caleb’s hands, then looked back up at the red fingerprint marks on my neck.

"Your father spent ten years in a maximum-security military prison because of me, boy," Ray whispered, his eyes flashing with a lethal, dark intensity. "He survived because he learned to stay out of my state. He built his entire real estate empire in New York and Chicago because he knew if he ever brought his corrupt business back to Oregon, I would finish what I started in 1971."

Ray reached out, his calloused, grease-stained hand moving with a lightning speed that Caleb couldn't react to. He grabbed Caleb by the throat, his thumb pressing firmly into the exact same spot where Caleb had bruised my skin. Caleb’s eyes went wide with a sudden, suffocating panic, his hands clawing uselessly at Ray’s iron grip.

"Ray, please! He didn't know!" Martin begged, dropping to his knees on the hospital floor, his corporate arrogance completely shattered into pieces. "I swear to you, I didn't know Nora was your niece! If I had known, I would have never let him near her! Don't kill him, Ray. Please, don't kill my son."

"You taught him that women in this family are assets to be controlled, Martin," Ray said, slowly releasing his grip on Caleb, letting my husband stumble backward into the armchair, gasping for air. Ray wiped his hand on his jacket, looking at them with complete disgust. "You thought you could buy your way into this state and treat my flesh and blood like spare furniture. The marriage is over. And by tomorrow morning, your entire Portland expansion project is going to burn to the ground."
