Part 2: The House of Cards

The silence that followed Mark’s accusation was heavier than stone. Eleanor clutched her throat, her manicured fingers trembling against her neck. She looked like a woman who had just seen her entire world tilt on its axis. Beside her, Arthur had set his wine glass down, but his hand was shaking so violently the crystal rattled against the mahogany table.

"Mark, what are you talking about?" Arthur asked, his voice cracking. He looked from his son to his wife, his face a mask of confusion. "What $50,000?"

"Oh, he knows exactly what I’m talking about," Mark said, never taking his eyes off his mother. "I was looking through the joint statements while I was helping Dad set up his online portal last month, Eleanor. There was a massive withdrawal, disguised as a 'consulting fee' for a firm that doesn't exist. A firm registered in your name."

Eleanor finally found her voice, though it lacked its usual imperious authority. "It was an investment, Mark! I was trying to secure a future for the entire family! I was trying to help Chloe’s father start that new venture—"

"You stole money meant for my father’s medical care to fund your sister’s failed business attempts," Mark roared, the restraint he had shown earlier finally snapping. He leaned over the table, his shadow engulfing the room. "And you wanted Lily’s laptop because you probably already pawned your own jewelry to cover the shortfall, didn't you? You needed something of value to hand over to whoever is breathing down your neck about this missing cash."

The truth hit the room like a physical blow. Chloe, sensing the sudden shift in power, took a tentative step backward, her smirk long gone. I reached out and took Lily’s hand, pulling her slightly closer to me. The greed that had defined Eleanor’s existence had finally backed her into a corner she couldn't lie her way out of.

Arthur stood up, his face turning from pale to a deep, dangerous crimson. "Is this true, Eleanor?" he asked, his voice unnervingly quiet. "Did you take my retirement money for your sister?"

Eleanor didn't answer. She only looked at Mark, her eyes welling with the same crocodile tears she had expected Lily to produce. "I did it for family," she whispered.

"Family?" Mark let out a harsh, jagged laugh. "You don't know the first thing about family. You only know how to trade people’s trust for your own vanity. Tonight, dinner is over. And tomorrow morning, you are going to the bank with Dad to figure out exactly how you're going to pay back every single cent you stole."
