PART 2: THE LIQUIDATION OF CUSTODY

PART 2: THE LIQUIDATION OF CUSTODY

The front door didn't just open; it was bypassed completely as two uniform paramedics and a state child protection officer pushed into the kitchen.

The festive country music was cut short as the officer, a stern-faced woman named Agent Vance, took in the scene: the shattered glass, the spreading pool of wine, and Natalie still standing aggressively over her sister.

"Step away from the mother," Agent Vance commanded, her voice slicing through the room like a razor.

Natalie immediately dropped her arms, her previous fury melting into a defensive, high-society stutter. "Officer, thank goodness you're here. My sister Emily is having a severe psychological episode. She's been working double shifts at the hospital and—"

"Save it," the lead paramedic interrupted, kneeling smoothly beside Emily. He gently checked Rosie’s vitals, his brow furrowing as he smelled the residue on the child's breath. "The child has been chemically sedated. Heart rate is dangerously depressed. We need an immediate toxicology screen."

Emily stood up, holding Rosie tightly as they transferred her to a mobile gurney. Her eyes locked onto her mother and Natalie, who were quietly trying to whisper to their lawyer on a cell phone near the balloon arch.

"You gave my two-year-old child a toxic dose of sedatives because she was crying during cake time," Emily said, her voice dropping into a deadly, level baritone that filled the silent kitchen.

"It was just a standard dose of allergy medicine, Emily!" her mother barked from the back, trying to smooth down her blouse. "You are completely overreacting to humiliate this family in front of our neighbors!"

"I am a pediatric nurse practitioner at St. Claire Emergency Care, Mother," Emily said, her gaze turning into absolute stone. "I know exactly what a Benadryl overdose looks like. And I know exactly what criminal child endangerment looks like."

Marcus Bell, a high-ranking attorney who had been a guest at the party, stepped forward from the crowd. He didn't look at Natalie. He walked straight to Emily and handed her his card. "I’ve already recorded the state of the room, Emily. The medical clipboard on the floor has Natalie's private prescription list on it. The police have already initiated a search warrant for her vehicle."
