Plot twist

Part 2: The Paper Trail of Deceit

The echo of the police radios crackled through the grand conservatory, completely swallowing the romantic string music that had been playing just moments before. The two hundred wedding guests sat frozen in their seats, their champagne glasses hovering mid-air as the reality of the boardroom coup unfolded in front of the altar.

Derek struggled against the grip of the officers, his polished leather shoes slipping against the pristine white floor. "Arthur, please! This is an outrage! I've given eight years to Vale Meridian! I doubled our procurement margins in the third quarter!"

"You doubled your own offshore accounts, Derek," Arthur Vale said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, booming baritone that instantly silenced the murmurs in the gallery. He didn't look like a proud father-in-law anymore; he looked like the corporate predator who had built a multi-billion-dollar empire from nothing. "You didn't generate margins. You generated fake invoices from a logistics shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under your new brother-in-law's name."

Vanessa, still collapsed on the floor in her lace gown, let out a sharp, hysterical sob. She looked up at me, her manicured hands shaking against the silk train of her dress. "Nadia... please. It wasn't Derek's fault. We were backed into a corner... the wedding costs... the lifestyle—"

"The half-million-dollar wedding package at the Imperial Grand was funded entirely by a fraudulent vendor-relations expense account," I said, stepping past Derek to look down at her. "I spent ten years tracking discrepancies for the state regulatory board before I ever met Derek. Did you honestly think I wouldn't recognize a classic double-billing scheme when it appeared on my father's corporate ledger?"

"You... you knew?" Derek whispered, the anger in his face completely evaporating, replaced by a sickly, hollow horror. He looked from me to the Notice of Immediate Dismissal resting on the table. "The position in the audit unit... you weren't just working late. You were hunting me."

"I was balancing the books, Derek," I said, my voice dead and cold. "When we divorced, you told our friends I was an unstable, broke housewife who couldn't survive without your corporate salary. You paid Noah's medical child support three weeks late every month while you were transferring fifty thousand dollars a week into Vanessa’s private trust. But numbers don't lie. And they certainly don't forget."

The lead detective stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "Derek Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and identity fraud. You have the right to remain silent."
