PART 2: THE SECRETS IN THE SHADOWS

PART 2: THE SECRETS IN THE SHADOWS

The waiting room of St. Joseph Medical Center was dead silent, save for the hum of the fluorescent lights.

Michael sat alone on a plastic chair, his face buried in his hands.

The light blue button-down shirt he wore was soaked with sweat at the collar.

He looked at his hands. They were stained with the dust of the Mississippi highway he had torn down at a hundred miles an hour.

An hour ago, he was a millionaire executive.

An hour ago, he believed he could have it all—the legacy, the mistress, the corporate throne.

Now, he had nothing but the echoing sound of a flatlining monitor in his ears.

The heavy double doors of the surgical wing swung open.

Michael stood up so fast his chair tipped over, clattering against the linoleum.

A doctor in blue scrubs walked out, pulling off his surgical mask. His eyes were heavy, tired, and entirely unreadable.

"Mr. Whitman?" the doctor asked.

"Are they... are they alive?" Michael choked out, his voice a ragged whisper.

The doctor took a slow, deep breath.

"Your wife suffered a severe placental abruption brought on by extreme stress and physical trauma from the storm," the doctor said, his voice flat. "We had to perform an emergency vertical C-section."

Michael’s breath hitched. "And the twins? Aiden and Savannah?"

"They are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit," the doctor replied. "They are stable, but they are critically underweight. The next forty-eight hours will decide everything."

Michael let out a broken gasp, sinking back against the wall.

"Can I see her?" he whispered.

"Mrs. Whitman is awake," the doctor said, his expression turning sharp and cold. "But she has requested that you do not enter her room. In fact, her attorney has already arrived."

From the shadows of the hallway, a tall woman in a tailored charcoal suit stepped forward.

It was Nicole's attorney, Victoria Vance, the most ruthless family lawyer in the state of Mississippi.

She carried a sleek leather briefcase, her eyes locking onto Michael like an apex predator spotting weak prey.

"Thomas Miller might have let you play your little games in the corporate world, Michael," Victoria said, her heels clicking perfectly against the floor. "But you're in my world now."

Michael sneered, trying to find his old, arrogant footing. "You can't keep me from my wife. I own the estate. I fund her life."

Victoria pulled a document from her briefcase and held it out, dropping it directly onto the empty chair beside him.

"You don't own anything anymore, Michael," she said smoothly. "While you were driving here, the forensic audit Nicole and Emily initiated three weeks ago was delivered to the federal prosecutor. Your offshore shipping accounts? Frozen. Your corporate holding company? Seized under suspicion of racketeering."

Michael’s phone buzzed violently in his pocket.

He pulled it out.

A single text from his father read: The board just voted. You're out, son. They're liquidating everything to cover the debt.
