PART 3: THE SEGREGATION OF ASSETS

PART 3: THE SEGREGATION OF ASSETS

By midnight, a steady, persistent rain had taken over the city, blurring the neon lights of the Loop into long, bleeding streaks against the wet asphalt. Inside a small, dimly lit apartment on the edge of the Pilsen neighborhood, Maya sat on the edge of a twin bed, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of her triplets' chests under their cotton blankets.

A soft, authoritative knock sounded on the front door.

Maya froze, her heart hammering against her ribs as she reached for the kitchen knife resting on the counter. She pulled the door open an inch, the chain lock catching with a sharp clink.

Adrian stood in the hallway, soaked to the skin, his black wool coat heavy with rain. He looked entirely stripped of his corporate armor, his hands held open, completely empty.

"Maya," he murmured, his voice cracking slightly. "Please."

"You need to leave, Adrian," she said, her voice a sharp, desperate whisper. "Your grandfather's people have been watching the block for two hours. Camille's father sent a legal representative to my shift at the clinic this afternoon. They offered me an injunction to leave the state."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed into glass slits as he looked down the dark hallway behind him. "My grandfather doesn't dictate the parameters anymore. Arthur Vance is currently filing the separation waivers. I'm moving the family dividend reserves out of the Vale trust."

"I don't want your money, Adrian!" Maya hissed, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Four years ago, you stood in my kitchen and told me I was nothing but a distraction to your family's future. You told me to disappear."

"Because I thought you betrayed me," Adrian said, leaning his forehead against the heavy wood of the doorframe. "I was blind, Maya. I let them write the script. But I looked into my daughter's eyes today. I know the truth now."

A sudden high-pitched chirp cut through the quiet apartment. Maya’s personal phone lit up on the counter, displaying a live security alert from the building’s main lobby entrance downstairs: EXTERNAL ACCESS OVERRIDE ACTIVATED BY PRIVATE VEHICLE CORRIDOR.
