Plot twist

Chapter 11 - THE HOSPITAL ROOM WHERE NOBODY LIED

Giovanni stayed two nights.

Bullet passed cleanly through shoulder.

No major nerve damage.

Painful.

Recoverable.

He complained constantly.

I told nurses to ignore him.

He informed everyone I was not his nurse.

Correct.

I was his girlfriend.

The word still felt strange.

Lily visited only after security cleared and Giovanni moved private room.

My choice.

She carried card.

On front:

GET WELL MR GIOVANNI

Inside:

A volcano.

No reason.

He loved it.

Caterina came.

Sofia.

Mateo.

Marco.

Even Alessandro Bellini sent flowers Giovanni immediately removed.

Too much pollen.

I suspected spite.

The shooting had nothing to do with Jessica.

Important.

It was consequence of Luca network and frightened associate.

Still, it forced future questions.

Could I date a man whose life occasionally included armed parking garages?

I asked directly.

“Yes.”

Giovanni said.

“That risk exists.”

“Can you eliminate?”

“No.”

“Reduce?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

He described legitimate security.

Company restructuring.

No illegal retaliation.

No personal enforcers.

He had inherited Fierro family businesses with old criminal associations—extortion? We should be careful. Fiction. He had spent years pushing operations legal.

“Did you ever order violence?”

I asked.

He did not evade.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“When?”

“Twelve years ago.”

“What?”

“A man stole from family and threatened my cousin.”

“I ordered two men to intimidate him.”

“Was he hurt?”

“Broken ribs.”

I closed eyes.

“You told me mostly legal.”

“I should have told you this earlier.”

“Yes.”

“Anything else?”

He described past.

Not murder.

Not glamorous.

Threats.

Payments to port intermediaries.

Some illegal practices ended years earlier.

I felt sick.

“Why tell now?”

“Because you asked.”

“Would you have volunteered?”

He paused.

“Not enough.”

There.

Not perfect.

We talked.

Hours.

I did not decide immediately.

Love does not erase values.

I left hospital that night alone.

He did not send security after me.

I thought.

Could I build life around someone with past violence?

Could he truly change?

Was I repeating Tyler by believing potential?

Difference mattered:

Evidence.

Current systems.

Accountability.

Giovanni had disclosed records to authorities during investigations.

No current illegal operations found.

Past acts partly beyond limitations but documented.

He had created victim restitution fund through counsel? Perhaps too convenient. We can have he had already settled civil claims and removed involved executives years before. No sainthood.

I spoke to therapist.

Priya not relationship therapist.

Megan.

Sofia.

No one decided.

Then I asked Giovanni after discharge:

“If your family demanded violence tomorrow?”

“I’d refuse.”

“If company lost money?”

“Yes.”

“If refusing put you out?”

“Yes.”

“How know?”

“I don’t.”

That surprised.

He continued.

“I can tell you what systems I’ve built so I’m not only person deciding.”

Good.

He did not say trust me.

He showed governance.

I chose to continue dating.

Slow.

Tyler meanwhile served sentence.

Lily’s letters were supervised.

First:

Hi Lily. I’m sorry I missed volcano project. I’m learning about basalt. Love, Dad.

She rolled eyes.

“He googles too much.”

But she wrote back:

BASALT IS NOT THE BEST ONE. PUMICE FLOATS.

Progress.

I never forced.

Vanessa’s baby Emma grew.

Lily met half-sister through Vanessa.

I was nervous.

Vanessa too.

They played blocks.

Children did not care adult history.

At custody review after Tyler release months later? Timeline maybe later. For now he is serving 18 months, will release during Ch12.

My nurse-practitioner program accepted me.

I opened email at 5:04 a.m. before shift.

Stared.

Congratulations.

I cried in medication room.

Coworker thought patient died.

“No.”

“What?”

“School.”

They screamed quietly.

I called Mom.

Then Megan.

Then Giovanni.

He said:

“I’m proud of you.”

I stiffened slightly.

“Because doctor-adjacent?”

“No.”

“Because you wanted this and did it.”

Good.

I paid tuition through loans, employer assistance, savings.

Giovanni offered nothing.

Not because ungenerous.

Because I had said:

“I need this to be mine.”

He respected.

When schedule overwhelmed, he helped with childcare only after I invited and within clear role.

Sometimes Megan.

Mom.

Sophia.

Giovanni.

Community.

Lily once asked:

“Is Mr. Giovanni family?”

I said:

“Maybe.”

She groaned.

“Your favorite word.”

I laughed.

A year after shooting, Fierro company case fully closed.

Independent monitor found compliance improvements.

Caterina restored limited trust seat, not control.

Luca still imprisoned.

Sofia successful.

Adriana convicted.

No one died.

No empire collapsed.

Better.

Real change is often paperwork and fewer dramatic headlines.

Giovanni and I took our first trip.

Three days Wisconsin Dells because Lily wanted water slides.

He hated.

Absolutely hated.

Children splashed him.

He lost expensive sunglasses.

Lily laughed until hiccups.

At night, after she slept, we sat balcony.

Giovanni said:

“I want to marry you someday.”

I froze.

Not proposal.

Statement.

He continued:

“Not now.”

“Good.”

“I mean when you want.”

“Maybe never.”

“Yes.”

“Would you still stay?”

His eyes held mine.

“Yes.”

That mattered.

I looked at him.

“I might.”

He smiled.

“Terrifying answer.”

“My favorite.”

Then I kissed him.

No fake wife.

May you like

No ballroom.

Just possibility.
