Plot twist

Chapter 5 - THE ULTRASOUND HAD BEEN PLANTED IN TREVOR’S COAT BY THE ONLY MAN WHO WANTED THE WEDDING TO FAIL

Ryan Mercer requested a lawyer before answering questions.

Smart.

His attorney arrived.

Then federal investigators.

Then nobody told Camille anything for six hours.

She hated being excluded from a story built around her own wedding.

Dante apparently hated it more.

He paced across the private waiting room at the police building until Camille finally said:

“If you walk past that window one more time, I’m charging you rent.”

He stopped.

“You joke when you’re angry.”

“I invoice when I’m angrier.”

Sofia sat on the couch beside them, discharged from the hospital but under protection.

Dante wanted her at one of his secure properties.

Sofia refused.

“I spent thirty-six hours unable to leave where somebody put me.”

“I am not going from Trevor’s locked apartment to your guarded mansion.”

Dante looked wounded.

Camille almost smiled.

Sofia had a point.

She temporarily stayed at a private apartment arranged through her attorney with independent security.

Not Dante’s.

That represented progress for the entire Bellini family.

Finally Detective Ruiz entered.

“Ryan is cooperating.”

Dante stopped moving.

“Why?”

“He is scared of Marco.”

“Healthy.”

Camille looked at Dante.

“Not helping.”

Ruiz sat.

“Ryan says he worked with Trevor.”

Sofia’s face tightened.

“How?”

“Initially laundering smaller amounts through consulting invoices.”

“Ryan believed Marco was skimming from Bellini.”

“Trevor handled structures.”

“Ryan provided access to certain accounts.”

Camille asked:

“Why plant the ultrasound?”

Ruiz looked at her.

“Because Ryan wanted the wedding canceled.”

Silence.

“Out of morality?”

Camille asked.

Ruiz almost laughed.

“No.”

“Self-preservation.”

Ryan had discovered Marco planned to move the largest amount Saturday night after the wedding.

Once completed, Marco intended to blame Trevor for everything.

Trevor planned to disappear.

Ryan believed he would become the remaining witness.

He panicked.

He knew Sofia had confronted Trevor.

Saw Trevor shove the ultrasound into his coat during their argument.

When Trevor later left the garment bag at the consultant apartment, Ryan took it.

Delivered it personally to the Hunt house.

He intentionally left the ultrasound in the coat pocket.

“He hoped you would find it.”

Ruiz said.

Camille stared.

“My wedding collapsed because Trevor’s accomplice became nervous.”

“Yes.”

Sofia whispered:

“That may have saved all of us.”

Camille looked at her.

Maybe.

She hated giving coincidence that much credit.

“What about Marco?”

Dante asked.

Ruiz looked at him.

“Ryan says Marco is looking for Trevor too.”

That surprised everyone.

“They aren’t together?”

“No.”

“Trevor took something from Marco.”

“What?”

“A hardware wallet.”

Dante’s face changed.

“Crypto?”

“Likely.”

“How much?”

“Ryan estimates twelve million.”

Camille blinked.

“Where did twelve come from?”

“Marco had been stealing longer than six months.”

“Years.”

Dante sat.

There it was.

The price of keeping family corruption quiet because confronting it was inconvenient.

Marco had built his own empire underneath Dante’s.

Trevor discovered it.

Instead of exposing him, joined him.

Then eventually stole from the thief.

“Where’s Trevor?”

Sofia asked.

“Ryan doesn’t know.”

“He believes Trevor is trying to leave the country with the wallet.”

Camille felt something unpleasant.

“Then why contact me?”

“Because he needs something.”

Ruiz said.

“What?”

Ryan had an answer.

Trevor could not access the hardware wallet fully without a passphrase.

Marco retained part.

Trevor had another.

The third component was hidden inside Hunt-Hale’s corporate compliance archive.

Trevor had designed a three-part recovery mechanism to prevent Marco from taking everything.

Camille stared.

“Why would I know it?”

“Ryan says you don’t.”

“But Trevor thinks you may be able to recover it from his laptop.”

Because she was a compliance specialist.

Trevor had built even his escape route around her competence.

Sofia muttered:

“I hate him.”

Camille nodded.

“That’s becoming efficient.”

Dante looked toward Ruiz.

“What does Marco want?”

“The same passphrase.”

“Which means both men may contact Camille.”

Dante’s expression became hard.

“No.”

Camille turned.

“No what?”

“She leaves Chicago.”

Her eyebrows rose.

Dante realized.

Too late.

He rubbed his forehead.

“Would you consider leaving Chicago temporarily?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“My mother lives here.”

“My company is here.”

“My apartment is here.”

“I have done nothing wrong.”

“And I am not going into exile because two dishonest men think my brain belongs to their financial plan.”

Dante looked furious.

Not at her.

At reality.

“That makes protecting you difficult.”

“I didn’t ask you to.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

“Here we go.”

Dante lowered his voice.

“Camille, both men have already demonstrated willingness to imprison people.”

“That is why I’m working with police.”

“And police are not omnipresent.”

“Neither are you.”

He looked like he wanted to argue.

Then stopped.

Good.

Camille continued.

“I will accept security recommendations.”

“Not ownership.”

“I will vary routes.”

“Not hide in your house.”

“I will tell law enforcement if Trevor contacts me.”

“And if there is immediate danger, I have your number.”

Dante nodded.

Reluctantly.

“Fine.”

“Terrible enthusiasm.”

“I’m learning.”

Maybe.

That evening, Camille returned to her mother’s home.

Not alone.

Her company had arranged professional security through an independent firm after learning her identity was tied to an active financial-crime case.

Dante disliked that it was not his people.

Camille considered that a bonus.

She opened Trevor’s old wedding box one last time.

Invitations.

Vendor lists.

Receipts.

A note he once wrote:

Fourteen hours until forever.

She almost laughed.

Then something beneath the box lining caught her attention.

A thin envelope.

No address.

Inside:

A flash drive.

And a note.

C—IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG, YOU’LL KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THIS. T

Camille stood perfectly still.

Trevor had placed it there before disappearing.

Maybe before the ultrasound.

She called Ruiz.

Then Michelle.

Not Dante.

Police imaged the drive.

Encrypted.

Trevor had apparently expected Camille to recognize the password architecture.

She did.

He always complained that her passwords were ridiculous.

Her father’s favorite quote, modified with numbers.

But Trevor would not know the exact one.

Instead, the encryption hint read:

THE PLACE YOU SAID YES

Camille went cold.

Trevor proposed at the Art Institute.

Gallery 273.

In front of a painting Camille loved.

The password was not romantic.

It was location data.

273Cezanne

The drive opened.

Inside were records documenting Marco’s theft.

Accounts.

Bribes.

Shell firms.

Payments to port officials.

Police.

Union contractors.

And recordings.

Trevor had been collecting insurance against Marco.

Then Camille found a folder named:

DANTE

Her pulse changed.

Inside were records proving Dante had discovered some of Marco’s illegal side payments nearly eighteen months earlier.

Dante confronted him privately.

Marco promised repayment.

Dante allowed him to remain.

Then another file.

Audio.

Dante’s voice.

If this reaches Sofia or any civilian, you’re done. I don’t care whose son you are.

Marco:

You won’t throw family to prosecutors.

Dante:

Don’t test that.

The recording ended.

Camille listened twice.

Dante had known Marco was corrupt.

But the recording also showed he had drawn a line.

A line Marco later crossed.

Camille hated that she understood Dante better because Trevor had secretly recorded him.

Then a second audio.

Trevor and Marco.

Marco:

Dante won’t move unless someone makes it personal.

Trevor:

Sofia?

Marco:

Maybe.

Trevor:

Leave her out.

Marco laughed.

You’re sleeping with her. She’s already in.

Camille closed her eyes.

Even Trevor had once objected.

Then he kept going anyway.

People love locating a single moment when someone becomes bad.

Reality is usually a series of opportunities to stop.

Trevor had received many.

He ignored each one.

The final file was a video Trevor recorded himself.

He sat in a hotel room.

Looked exhausted.

“Camille.”

She stopped breathing.

“If you’re watching this, I either got out or everything fell apart.”

He looked directly at the camera.

“I know you’ll think I used you.”

Camille laughed bitterly.

Correct.

“I did.”

At least honest.

“But not at first.”

“I loved you.”

“I still do.”

She almost turned it off.

Then:

“Marco pulled me in after I discovered irregular consulting payments.”

“I thought I could make money and get out.”

“Then I met Sofia.”

“I told myself that was separate.”

“It wasn’t.”

“Nothing stayed separate.”

He rubbed his face.

“I’m sorry.”

Then the important part.

“Marco has people inside Dante’s legitimate companies.”

“If Dante goes down too fast, Marco takes everything.”

“If I disappear, give these files to someone outside Bellini.”

“You’ll know how.”

Camille stared.

Trevor had not trusted Dante.

But he had trusted Camille’s professional instincts after exploiting them.

Infuriating.

Then Trevor said:

“There’s one more thing.”

“Marco has been planning to kill Dante.”

Camille’s skin chilled.

“He thinks if Dante dies while Sofia is pregnant and emotionally unstable, he can control enough family votes through guardianship and emergency governance to take Bellini Holdings.”

“Don’t let Dante go anywhere near the old cold-storage building.”

“He wired it.”

Video ended.

Camille’s phone rang immediately.

Dante.

She answered.

“Where are you?”

He asked.

She stared at the screen.

“Why?”

“Marco contacted me.”

Her blood went cold.

“What did he say?”

“He has Trevor.”

“And?”

“He wants me at the old cold-storage building.”

Camille stood.

“Dante, no.”

Silence.

Then:

“That is the first time you’ve given me an order.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

“Trevor left evidence.”

She spoke quickly.

“The building may be wired.”

“He said Marco intends to kill you.”

Dante became silent.

Then:

“Send everything to Ruiz.”

“Already doing it.”

Good.

Dante exhaled.

“I wasn’t going alone.”

“That is not comforting enough.”

“What do you want me to do?”

The question stopped her.

Not:

Here is what I am doing.

What do you want me to do?

Camille took a breath.

“Work with law enforcement.”

“No private rescue.”

“No Bellini men storming the building.”

“Not even if Trevor is inside?”

“Especially then.”

“He helped create this.”

“That doesn’t mean Marco gets to murder him.”

Dante was silent.

Then:

“Okay.”

Camille closed her eyes.

“Okay?”

“Yes.”

“I hate it.”

“Good.”

May you like

“But yes.”

For the first time since Dante Bellini entered her mother’s house, Camille believed he might actually understand the difference between power and control.
