Plot twist

Chapter 4 - GRANT HARLAN DISCOVERED THE BOY EXISTED

Cassian did not tell anyone about Owen.

Not his security chief.

Not his attorneys.

Not the men who had worked beside him for twenty years.

Only his sister Alessia knew, because she walked into his office two days later and found him staring at a child’s drawing of a dinosaur.

She picked it up.

“Either you’ve suffered a neurological event or there is a child.”

Cassian took the paper.

“Owen.”

“Who is Owen?”

He looked at her.

Alessia’s face changed.

“No.”

Cassian said nothing.

Her hand covered her mouth.

“Mara?”

“Yes.”

“How old?”

“Five.”

Alessia sat down.

“Oh my God.”

Then:

“I’m going to kill her.”

“No.”

“I’m joking.”

“You’re not.”

“Half joking.”

Cassian’s expression hardened.

“She was afraid I would take him.”

Alessia went quiet.

“Would you have?”

Five years earlier.

Same question.

Cassian leaned back.

“I don’t know.”

His sister’s face softened.

“Then don’t be angry she didn’t know either.”

Apparently everyone had become wiser while Cassian remained busy regretting things.

He hated it.

Mara rented an apartment near Evan’s hospital.

She did not stay at Cassian’s penthouse.

He did not offer.

Not because he didn’t want them there.

Because offering a fortress to a woman who once ran from his power seemed like terrible symbolism.

Instead, he visited when invited.

Wednesday dinner.

Saturday afternoon.

One trip to the Shedd Aquarium after Owen announced sharks were “better than mafia.”

Cassian accepted defeat.

Owen asked hundreds of questions.

“Do you have a gun?”

“Yes.”

“Now?”

“No.”

“Did you bring bodyguards?”

“They’re outside.”

“Mom says bodyguards make people nervous.”

“Your mother says many things about me.”

Mara looked over.

“Most are accurate.”

Owen laughed.

Cassian found himself laughing too.

It was dangerous.

Not in the old way.

He began wanting ordinary things.

Breakfast.

School pickup.

Knowing which pajamas Owen preferred.

That kind of wanting terrified him more than bullets.

Because none of it could be taken.

It had to be given.

Then Grant Harlan found out.

The first sign came through Vale Holdings.

A private investigator Cassian had used years earlier called Alessia.

He had been approached by Harlan’s people.

They wanted confirmation that Mara Bennett had returned to Chicago with a child.

Cassian’s blood went cold.

“How?”

Alessia asked.

“Could be airport records.”

“Hospital.”

“Little Stone.”

“Someone saw them.”

Cassian’s first instinct was immediate.

Move Mara.

Secure Owen.

Lock everything down.

He called her.

Then stopped before the call connected.

Choice.

He texted.

HARLAN MAY KNOW YOU’RE BACK. I HAVE INFORMATION. CALL WHEN YOU’RE READY.

Mara called thirty seconds later.

“What?”

Cassian explained.

She went silent.

“Do you think Owen is in danger?”

“Yes.”

Honesty.

No softening.

“Why?”

“Harlan spent years looking for leverage over me.”

“If he realizes Owen is my son, he may see him as leverage.”

Mara’s voice changed.

“What do you recommend?”

Not:

What are you doing?

Recommend.

Cassian forced himself to answer differently than instinct.

“Three options.”

“Police and formal protective measures.”

“Private security you choose.”

“Or leaving Chicago temporarily while we assess.”

“Your security?”

“Only if you want.”

Mara exhaled.

“Police first.”

“Yes.”

“Independent security.”

“Fine.”

“And Cassian?”

“Yes?”

“No disappearing to solve this yourself.”

His jaw tightened.

“Mara.”

“No.”

“If I find out Harlan threatened my son and you start a war without telling me, we’re done.”

The word done hurt more than it should.

“We’re not together.”

“You know what I mean.”

He did.

“Okay.”

“Say it.”

“I will not act against Harlan without telling you unless there is an immediate threat requiring response.”

Mara paused.

“That is annoyingly lawyerly.”

“Alessia helped.”

“Of course.”

They contacted Chicago police.

Cassian’s attorneys shared years of documented threats and business conflicts involving Harlan.

Mara hired a licensed security company unrelated to Vale.

Evan moved temporarily into Mara’s apartment after another hospital stay.

He hated it.

“I’m dying, not contagious.”

“You also fell in the shower.”

“Slippery floor.”

“Because you’re weak.”

“Rude.”

Owen climbed into bed beside him every morning.

For three weeks, things remained calm.

Then a package arrived at Little Stone.

No return address.

Inside was the fake partnership agreement from five years earlier.

The same forged signatures.

Cassian.

Evan.

Under it:

A photograph of Owen leaving kindergarten.

Mara stopped breathing.

Naomi called police.

Then Cassian.

This time Mara did not need to ask him to come.

She said:

“Please.”

One word.

Cassian arrived seven minutes later.

He did not touch the photograph.

Police handled it.

The note beneath said:

YOU RAN ONCE. ASK VALE WHAT HAPPENS TO PEOPLE WHO RUN TWICE.

Mara’s hands shook.

Cassian stood several feet away.

He wanted to hold her.

Didn’t.

She looked at him.

“Do you know what this means?”

“Harlan wants you frightened of me.”

“Again.”

“Yes.”

Five years earlier, the strategy had worked.

This time, Mara looked at Cassian.

“Tell me everything.”

He did.

No editing.

No protecting.

Grant Harlan had started as a real-estate investor competing with Vale Holdings.

His brother, Thomas Harlan, had become involved in illegal gambling operations controlled by Cassian’s father.

Thomas lost money.

Then stole from the operation.

Cassian was twenty-nine when his father ordered Thomas beaten.

Cassian carried out the order.

Not personally.

He authorized it.

Thomas died from complications three days later.

Cassian’s throat tightened.

“I didn’t order him killed.”

Mara’s face went cold.

“You ordered men to beat him.”

“Yes.”

“And he died.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Owen was upstairs with Naomi.

Thank God.

Mara whispered:

“Grant knows?”

“Yes.”

“That’s why he hates you.”

“Yes.”

“Did Thomas deserve the beating?”

Cassian closed his eyes.

“No.”

Not anymore.

Maybe once he would have justified it.

He continued.

“I told myself there were rules.”

“He stole.”

“He knew consequences.”

“Same language my father used.”

Mara stepped away.

“This is what I was afraid of.”

“I know.”

“And you let me date you for six months without telling me.”

“Yes.”

“I asked whether the stories were true.”

“You said it was complicated.”

“I lied by omission.”

“Yes.”

Mara looked furious.

Good.

Cassian would rather receive anger than frightened silence.

“Why tell me now?”

“Because you asked for everything.”

“And because Harlan is threatening our son.”

Cassian’s face tightened at the word.

Our.

Mara noticed.

“Do not make that mean more than it means.”

“I won’t.”

He almost did.

Then Evan entered slowly from the hallway.

He had heard.

“Grant used me because of Thomas.”

Cassian nodded.

Evan sat.

“He told me you killed his brother.”

Mara turned.

“You knew?”

“Not details.”

“Evan.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Everyone was always protecting me with less information.”

Evan looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

There.

No defense.

Mara began crying.

Not loudly.

Five years of men deciding what truth she could handle.

Cassian.

Evan.

Harlan twisting all of it.

She wiped her face.

“No more.”

Both men watched.

“If something involves me or Owen, I get the truth.”

Cassian nodded.

Evan did too.

“No deciding I’m safer ignorant.”

“Yes.”

“No secret deals.”

“Yes.”

“No one touches Harlan without law enforcement unless someone is in immediate physical danger.”

Cassian’s jaw tightened.

But:

“Yes.”

Mara looked at both.

“If either of you breaks that, I leave Chicago again.”

Evan almost smiled sadly.

“You always were dramatic.”

Mara threw a napkin at him.

For three seconds, they were siblings again.

Then Cassian’s phone rang.

Alessia.

He answered.

Her voice was sharp.

“Cassian, we have a problem.”

“What?”

“Someone just accessed old Vale surveillance archives.”

“Which archive?”

“The Halston dinner.”

Cassian went still.

Five years earlier.

The night Mara ran.

“From where?”

“An internal credential.”

His blood chilled.

“Whose?”

Silence.

Then Alessia said:

“Mine.”

Cassian looked toward Mara.

Harlan did not merely know Owen existed.

May you like

Someone inside Vale Holdings was helping him.

And that meant the danger was no longer outside the doors.
