Chapter 7 - ADRIAN REMEMBERED THE BRIEFCASE HIS FATHER MADE HIM DELIVER AT TWENTY-ONE

Memory is arrogant.
It tells you that if something mattered enough, you would remember correctly.
Adrian had built much of his adult confidence on memory.
Faces.
Deals.
Numbers.
Rooms.
Who said what.
Then Dominic’s complaint showed a date:
March 14, 2003.
Adrian remembered rain.
He remembered his father’s black Mercedes.
He remembered Elias Varga’s office above a law firm near Wacker Drive.
And a locked leather briefcase.
Carlo had handed it to him.
“Take this to Elias.”
“What is it?”
“Shipping manifests.”
“Why me?”
“Because you’re going downtown.”
Adrian had been twenty-one.
Home from college.
Trying desperately to prove he belonged in the family businesses.
He delivered.
Elias looked uncomfortable.
“Did you open?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Then Elias gave Adrian a receipt envelope.
Adrian brought it back.
That was all.
Or what he remembered.
Dominic’s filing alleged:
The briefcase contained ledgers documenting Pier Nine cash sources and unlawful harbor payments.
If true, Adrian had physically moved evidence.
Did he know?
No.
Could people believe he knew?
Easily.
Amelia read complaint with him.
He sat at kitchen table.
For twenty minutes he did not speak.
Then:
“I remember asking what it was.”
“That helps.”
“It is my memory.”
“Still.”
“My father lied.”
“Probably.”
“Elias may have records.”
“Find.”
He looked at her.
“You’re not saying you believe me.”
Amelia frowned.
“I do.”
“Why?”
“Because your account is specific and uncomfortable.”
“That isn’t proof.”
“No.”
“Then?”
“I believe you as my husband.”
“Your lawyers will still ask evidence.”
There.
Two forms of trust can coexist.
Adrian looked down.
“I don’t want you defending me publicly.”
“I wasn’t planning.”
He almost smiled.
Good.
The special committee expanded its review to Adrian’s historical involvement.
He supported.
Recused.
This time consequences personal.
Hale Meridian? Not. Moretti board.
Adrian temporarily delegated some harbor-transaction authority to COO Rebecca? Rebecca is counsel. Use COO Marcus Chen.
Independent directors interviewed Adrian.
Under oath? Internal, not necessarily. Counsel.
He answered.
“I delivered briefcase.”
“Did you open?”
“No.”
“Did your father say shipping manifests?”
“Yes.”
“Did you suspect financial records?”
“No.”
“Were you involved in cash-payment schemes?”
“Not knowingly.”
“What does not knowingly mean?”
“It means I cannot swear no transaction I touched indirectly was connected to misconduct I did not understand.”
Accurate.
Then:
“Did you ever carry cash?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
Adrian looked.
Old family business operated cash-heavy restaurants etc. He had moved cash at father’s direction.
“Several times.”
“For illegal purpose?”
“I was told business deposits or vendor payments.”
“Did you question?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I was twenty-one and wanted my father to think I was useful.”
There.
Hard truth.
Then evidence.
Elias’s files included receipt:
Received from A. Moretti sealed briefcase per C. Moretti. Courier not briefed on contents.
Adrian closed eyes.
Courier not briefed.
Then another memo from Elias to Carlo:
Do not use Adrian for sensitive material again. He asked what records concerned and you misrepresented contents. If this becomes relevant later, I will not allow you to make your son responsible for a decision he did not make.
Amelia cried reading.
Adrian did not.
At first.
Then he went to study.
Closed door.
She gave space.
An hour later he came back holding mother’s? No blanket, wrong story. He just looked exhausted.
“Elias protected me more than my father did.”
Amelia said:
“He protected truth.”
“That includes you.”
Adrian sat.
“My father wanted me useful.”
“Your father also amended trust to allow restitution later.”
“Both.”
Always both.
Carlo was not single thing.
Neither was Adrian.
The internal committee concluded no evidence Adrian knowingly participated in Pier Nine misconduct at twenty-one.
But they criticized his early-career acceptance of opaque family practices.
Adrian accepted.
Public statement:
Mr. Moretti has acknowledged performing limited courier and administrative tasks for his father as a young adult without sufficient inquiry. Independent records support his account that he was not informed of the contents of the specific 2003 transfer cited in litigation.
No halo.
Then federal interest.
Because Pier Nine source-of-funds review found old payments potentially linked to prior closed investigations.
Authorities requested documents voluntarily, then through formal process.
Moretti Maritime cooperated.
Dominic screamed family betrayal.
Adrian did not respond publicly.
Then Amelia faced new decision.
Caleb’s interview and ongoing Moretti coverage reduced wedding/event clients at Brooks and Bloom for two months.
Not catastrophic.
But real.
Some customers loved mafia association.
Others avoided.
One corporate client canceled citing “brand sensitivity.”
Amelia stared.
Old temptation:
Adrian can replace lost revenue.
No.
She redesigned marketing.
Emphasized local ownership.
Apprenticeship.
Florals.
Not husband.
She refused interviews about family.
Revenue recovered gradually.
Adrian asked:
“Do you want me to stop coming by front entrance?”
Amelia looked.
That hurt.
“Why?”
“Because photographers.”
“Are you ashamed?”
“No.”
“Then no.”
“I don’t want my presence costing you clients.”
“Maybe it does.”
“That doesn’t mean hide marriage.”
Good.
They compromised.
No security cluster.
He came normal.
Still Adrian Moretti.
Cannot erase.
Then Isabella’s rights were formally confirmed preliminarily by trustee.
She decided to create independent reserve for potential remediation if unlawful-source portion verified.
Not all.
Trace.
Specific.
Dominic called her.
First direct conversation in months.
“Carlo promised me.”
Isabella replied:
“Carlo lied to you.”
“You knew.”
“I did not.”
“You benefited.”
“So did you.”
Silence.
Then Dominic said:
“You’re choosing Adrian over family.”
Isabella laughed bitterly.
“Adrian is family.”
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes.”
“That’s problem.”
Then:
“If you take this from my children—”
“No.”
Isabella interrupted.
“I am not taking what was never theirs.”
Dominic’s voice changed.
“My children planned around it.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Sorry doesn’t fix.”
“No.”
“But their need does not create ownership.”
This principle belonged this story too conceptually, though phrase reminiscent of previous. Avoid exact? It's a strong universal theme. Could keep.
Then Dominic said:
“You sound like florist.”
Isabella smiled.
“Thank you.”
He hung up.
Two days later, Dominic suffered a mild stroke.
Not because of call.
Age.
Blood pressure.
Medical reality.
Hospital.
Francesca called Adrian.
“He’s asking for you.”
Adrian hesitated.
Amelia said:
“Do you want go?”
“Yes.”
“Then go.”
At Northwestern Memorial, Dominic looked smaller.
Left hand weak.
Speech slightly slurred but intact.
He saw Adrian.
“Come to enjoy?”
“No.”
“Liar.”
Adrian sat.
Dominic whispered:
“I spent forty years building what your father promised me.”
“I know.”
“He made me beg.”
“I know.”
“I won’t beg you.”
“I’m not asking.”
Then Dominic’s eyes filled.
“I did things for Carlo.”
Adrian’s stomach tightened.
“What things?”
Dominic looked toward door.
“Things he later pretended were mine.”
“Be specific.”
He laughed weakly.
“Always lawyer now.”
“Yes.”
Dominic breathed.
“Pier Nine money.”
“Some came from labor payments.”
“I moved cash.”
“Did Carlo know?”
“Yes.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
There.
Admission.
Adrian stayed still.
Dominic continued:
“Carlo decided he wanted clean hands after dirty work made money.”
“So he put assets in Isabella.”
“Then wrote me out.”
“He made me villain.”
“You did the conduct.”
“So did he.”
“Probably.”
Adrian said:
“Then tell investigators.”
Dominic stared.
“You want me prison.”
“I want truth.”
“Same thing sometimes.”
Maybe.
Then:
“Will you protect Francesca?”
Adrian immediately:
“From what?”
“My debts.”
“Her legal exposure.”
“I don’t know enough.”
Dominic’s eyes hardened.
“Promise.”
“No.”
Old Adrian might promise because family.
New Adrian refused facts he did not have.
“I will not punish her for your conduct.”
“I will not conceal hers if any.”
“That’s what I can promise.”
Dominic stared.
Then closed eyes.
“You really changed.”
“Yes.”
“Was it her?”
“Partly.”
Adrian thought.
“No.”
“Amelia made it harder for me to lie about why I hadn’t.”
Dominic almost smiled.
Then he gave Adrian one final piece.
“There’s another ledger.”
“Where?”
“Warehouse Seven.”
“Old foreman’s office.”
“Behind electrical panel.”
Adrian’s body tightened.
“Why tell now?”
Dominic looked toward ceiling.
“Because I’m tired.”
May you like
The second ledger would become the most important evidence in the entire Pier Nine investigation.
And unlike Elias’s careful records, this one contained names that were still alive.
