Chapter 6 - THE RIVAL WHO BUILT HIS CAREER ON ASHES

Adrian Cross scheduled his largest campaign rally at Civic Hall forty-eight hours after Elena’s rescue.

Thousands were expected.

Television networks planned live coverage.

Beneath the stage, according to Danner, stood a fireproof evidence safe containing the original Pier Nine security reels, insurance documents, and recordings Adrian used to control political allies.

He kept the archive beneath his public image because he trusted symbolism more than caution.

Federal investigators obtained a warrant.

Before they could execute it, Adrian released an edited recording of Dominic admitting he disabled the Pier Nine alarm.

The clip ended before Dominic explained the welding smoke or Adrian’s role.

Public fury exploded.

Protesters gathered outside Raines Capital and Harbor Light. Some carried photographs of the nine people killed. Others demanded Dominic’s arrest.

Clara did not dismiss them as manipulated.

Their anger had legitimate ground.

Dominic had disabled a safety system inside an illegal warehouse. His silence helped bury the truth.

Harbor Light’s board convened an emergency meeting.

Several directors wanted Clara placed on leave because her marriage created an appearance of compromised leadership.

Clara did not resist.

“The foundation must be credible without depending on my personal assurances,” she said.

She stepped aside pending independent review.

Dominic offered to resign from every remaining Raines Capital role.

The board accepted his temporary suspension but asked him to remain available to investigators.

For the first time since he was twenty-seven, Dominic controlled neither his company nor the foundation associated with his name.

At home, he stood before the city windows.

“Adrian took everything in two days.”

“No,” Clara said. “Governance moved without you.”

He looked at her.

“That is what you spent years building.”

“It does not feel like success.”

“Accountability rarely does.”

She joined him.

“If the investigations clear the legitimate companies, they will continue.”

“And if they don’t?”

“Then they should change or end.”

Dominic almost smiled.

“You are a severe wife.”

“You asked me to audit a company on our second date.”

“I was showing interest.”

“You sent six years of records.”

“I was very interested.”

The rally began at seven.

Federal agents entered Civic Hall through the loading area while Adrian addressed the crowd.

Clara, Dominic, Elena, and Sloane watched from a secure location.

Adrian stood beneath a banner reading TRUTH WITHOUT FEAR.

He described his father’s death.

He described Dominic as a “criminal heir purchasing redemption through charity.”

Then he announced documents proving Raines Capital laundered money through Harbor Light.

The displayed records showed donations from companies once linked to illegal Raines operations.

Some were real.

Dominic had disclosed them during restructuring.

The funds had been audited, taxed, and separated through restitution agreements, but Adrian presented them without context.

Harbor Light looked compromised.

Clara’s phone filled with board messages.

Adrian’s rally audience began chanting.

Then federal agents reached the safe.

It was empty.

Danner had given them a location Adrian already abandoned.

A note lay beneath the campaign stage:

PAUL ALWAYS NEEDED SOMEONE TO BELIEVE HIM.

Adrian knew Danner would betray him.

The original archive had been moved.

Police entered the stage area to execute a second warrant related to labor trafficking. Adrian’s security team blocked them.

The confrontation played live.

Adrian raised both hands.

“Chicago is watching the Raines family use law enforcement to silence reform.”

The crowd surged.

Officers retreated to prevent a stampede.

Adrian left through a protected tunnel.

He had transformed a lawful search into political theater.

Sloane watched the feed.

“I designed that tunnel entrance.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“Cross Meridian commissioned it for high-profile guests,” she explained. “It connects Civic Hall to the old municipal records building.”

Federal agents redirected.

The tunnel ended at an underground garage.

Adrian’s convoy was gone.

One vehicle remained.

Inside, investigators found Maria Alvarez unconscious.

Adrian’s men had taken her from the hotel sewing room.

A strip of the silver dress seam was tied around her wrist.

She survived, but the message was clear.

Adrian targeted everyone connected to the evidence.

Dominic’s fear returned.

“Clara goes to the secure residence.”

She looked at him.

He stopped before turning the sentence into an order.

“What do you want?” he corrected.

“I want security I approve. I want Maria protected. I want Elena involved in decisions concerning her evidence. And I want you to stop treating my consent as a delay you must endure before doing what you planned.”

Dominic absorbed the rebuke.

“All right.”

Elena identified another clue in the database.

Cross Meridian paid a climate-controlled archive company called Ash House Storage for nineteen years.

The address belonged to a warehouse near the old stockyards.

Federal agents raided it.

They found thousands of boxes.

The Pier Nine archive was missing.

But one document remained in a misfiled insurance folder.

A fuel-delivery authorization signed by Adrian Cross at 10:16 PM on the night of the fire.

It ordered twenty gallons of industrial solvent delivered to Pier Nine.

Adrian had always claimed he arrived after 11:30 and entered only to rescue his father.

The authorization proved he planned something earlier.

Dominic read it.

Then asked the question that would eventually destroy Adrian’s career:

“If my father ordered the fire at 11:42, Adrian, why did you authorize the fuel delivery eighty-six minutes before it started?”

May you like

They did not yet have him in a room to answer.

But Chicago would soon hear the question.
