Chapter 8 - THE GOLD RING

Spiros Stavros was seventy-one now.
He lived outside Thessaloniki.
He did not run.
He did not deny being in Marcus's car.
Through counsel, he agreed to speak.
Nikos listened from Olympus.
Eleni sat beside him.
Spiros appeared on the screen older than the man Nikos remembered.
White hair.
Heavy glasses.
A face that once frightened employees now softened by age.
“I wondered when that photograph would appear.”
Nikos's voice stayed cold.
“You helped Dad bury Callista.”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
No hesitation.
That almost made it worse.
“Why?”
“Because your father couldn't think.”
“Try again.”
Spiros sighed.
“Dimitri wanted Marcus dead.”
Eleni looked at Nikos.
That sounded more like the father he remembered.
“I stopped him.”
“Why?”
“Because killing a police officer three days after Callista's death would have turned every federal agency in New York toward the Stavros family.”
“So you paid him.”
“We paid for Callista's phone.”
“And the original?”
Spiros looked down.
“The original recording.”
Nikos leaned forward.
“What recording?”
“Callista made a video on her phone.”
The room went silent.
“She recorded Marcus?”
“Yes.”
“Doing what?”
“Talking.”
Spiros's face tightened.
“He was drunk. Angry. He admitted taking narcotics from evidence and selling them back through informants.”
“That proves corruption.”
“It proved more.”
Spiros swallowed.
“Callista confronted him about another woman he had hurt.”
Eleni felt sick.
Marcus's pattern went back further than Callista.
“What happened to the video?” Nikos asked.
“Dimitri watched it once.”
“And?”
“He realized Callista had also accidentally recorded him entering the room later that evening and discussing payments to Halloran.”
“So he destroyed it.”
“No.”
Spiros looked directly at him.
“I did.”
Nikos went still.
“What?”
“Your father couldn't.”
Spiros's eyes filled.
“He kept replaying her face.”
Nikos looked away.
For the first time, Dimitri's choice gained shape.
Not absolution.
Shape.
A grieving father.
A criminal empire.
Evidence that could expose his daughter's abuser while destroying himself.
He hesitated.
Spiros chose for him.
“I destroyed the original video,” Spiros said.
“But I copied the audio.”
“Where?”
“I gave it to Dimitri.”
“What did he do with it?”
“I don't know.”
Nikos's hand moved toward the empty place where his signet ring used to be.
Then he remembered something.
“My father's watch.”
Andreas looked up.
Dimitri owned an old gold pocket watch inherited from Nikos's grandfather.
After Dimitri died, it had been placed in a display case in Nikos's apartment.
Nikos had never opened it.
The watch arrived at Olympus an hour later.
Heavy.
Gold.
Scratched along one edge.
The back popped open normally.
Nothing.
Then Eleni noticed the velvet insert inside the presentation box.
“One side is thicker.”
Andreas removed it.
Beneath lay a slim digital storage card.
Old.
Wrapped in tissue.
On the tissue, Dimitri's handwriting:
FOR NIKOS WHEN HE IS READY TO HATE ME.
Nikos sat down.
Nobody spoke.
He inserted the card into an offline reader.
Three files appeared.
One was Callista's audio.
One was a scanned letter from Dimitri.
One was Callista's final voicemail, copied from her phone before Spiros destroyed the device.
Nikos opened his father's letter first.
Son,
If you are hearing this, then I failed to take this truth to my grave.
That was not courage. It was cowardice.
Callista told me Marcus hurt her.
I believed I could frighten him away without exposing our family.
I told her to stay home for two days.
She refused.
She said if I would not take her evidence to police, she would.
I was angry.
I told her she did not understand what she could destroy.
Those were the last words I spoke to my daughter.
Nikos stopped reading.
His face broke.
Not dramatically.
A single breath.
Then another.
Eleni placed her hand on the desk between them.
Not on him.
Near him.
He looked at it.
Then covered it with his.
Dimitri's letter continued.
I paid Vale to close the inquiry after she died.
I paid Halloran to keep our business from becoming part of it.
I paid Marcus for her phone because I wanted the proof before I killed him.
Spiros stopped me.
He was right to stop me.
He was wrong to destroy the video.
I was wrong to allow him.
I told myself I protected you.
The truth is uglier.
I protected what I had built because I could not bear to lose my daughter and my kingdom in the same week.
If you ever face that choice, choose the person.
Every time.
Nikos finished the letter.
Silence filled Olympus.
Eleni squeezed his hand.
“Your father knew what he did.”
“That doesn't fix it.”
“No.”
“Nothing fixes it.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“But truth matters.”
“Yes.”
Finally Nikos opened Callista's last voicemail.
The file began with traffic noise.
Breathing.
Her voice.
“Niko?”
He closed his eyes.
“I don't know if you'll get this.”
A car horn sounded somewhere behind her.
“I'm going to the garage because Marcus says he has my phone.”
Eleni's chest tightened.
“He says he'll give it back if I stop talking about the evidence.”
Callista gave a shaky laugh.
“I know that sounds stupid.”
Nikos whispered, “Callista…”
The recording continued.
“Dad thinks he can scare Marcus.”
A pause.
“He can't.”
Footsteps.
Then Callista whispered:
“Marcus followed me here.”
The file glitched.
Static swallowed several seconds.
Then her voice returned.
“I need you to know something before—”
The recording cut again.
Nikos stared at the screen.
Andreas checked the file.
“There's more.”
The damaged audio had another forty-three seconds.
He ran a repair process.
Sound returned.
Callista was crying now.
“Niko, if anything happens, Marcus—”
A man's voice shouted.
A struggle.
Then Callista screamed.
And underneath the noise, barely audible, came the words that changed the entire case:
“I didn't mean to push you.”
Marcus's voice.
Not a confession made years later.
Not a frightened witness remembering.
His own voice recorded seconds after Callista went over the edge.
But the recording did not end there.
Callista was still alive.
Weak.
Breathing.
Marcus said her name.
Then another voice arrived.
Halloran.
“What did you do?”
Marcus answered:
“She's alive.”
Halloran's next words were clear.
“Then call nobody until I tell you.”
Eleni covered her mouth.
Marcus had caused Callista's fall.
May you like
But Halloran had made the decision that turned an injury into a death.
And Marcus had obeyed.
