PART 3 — The Secret Eli Died Protecting

"I never told anyone..."
"...I'm having a boy."
The words barely escaped Adriana's lips.
Yet they landed with enough force to drain every trace of color from Damon's face.
No one outside her doctor knew.
Not the shelter where she had briefly stayed.
Not the landlord who rented her a tiny apartment under a fake surname.
Not even St. Cordova's payroll office.
Every medical record had been sealed under an alias.
She had made certain of it.
So how could they know?
Damon's jaw tightened.
"They've been watching you much longer than we realized."
Adriana slowly shook her head.
"I was careful."
"I know."
"I changed phones."
"I know."
"I moved four times."
"I know."
Tears welled in her eyes.
"Then how?"
Damon didn't answer immediately.
Because he already feared the truth.
Someone had been feeding information to the people hunting her.
Someone close enough to follow every move.
He turned toward his security chief.
"Lock the building."
The man nodded once.
Within seconds, the front doors were secured.
The restaurant lights dimmed.
Employees quietly disappeared into the kitchen.
Only Damon, Adriana, and a handful of trusted guards remained.
"Sit down."
"I'm fine."
"No."
His voice softened.
"You're exhausted."
For the first time all evening...
Adriana stopped arguing.
She lowered herself carefully into a nearby chair.
The adrenaline that had kept her standing was fading.
Her hands wouldn't stop shaking.
Damon placed a glass of water in front of her.
She stared at it without drinking.
"I promised Eli..."
Her voice cracked.
"...I promised I'd keep our baby away from all of this."
The words pulled Damon back nearly a year.
The rain.
The cemetery.
The black umbrellas.
Eli standing beside him only three days before the explosion.
"If anything happens to me..."
"Nothing's happening."
Eli had laughed.
"You always say that."
"I'm serious."
"You worry too much."
"And you don't worry enough."
Eli's smile had faded.
"If I'm wrong..."
"Take care of Adriana."
Damon had punched his shoulder.
"You'll tell her yourself."
Neither of them knew it would be their final conversation.
A security guard approached quietly.
"Sir."
Damon looked up.
"We found something."
He handed Damon a sealed envelope.
"No return address."
"It was delivered this afternoon."
"Before everything happened."
Damon frowned.
"Why wasn't I told?"
"It arrived while you were meeting investors."
He opened the envelope.
Inside...
There was only one photograph.
Nothing else.
No letter.
No explanation.
The picture showed Eli.
Standing beside a storage locker.
Smiling.
The image had clearly been taken secretly from a distance.
Across the bottom...
Someone had written three words in black marker.
LOOK INSIDE TWELVE.
Damon's heartbeat accelerated.
Storage locker twelve?
Where?
When?
Before he could think further—
Adriana gasped.
"I know that place."
Damon looked at her.
"What?"
"Eli took me there once."
"When?"
"A week before..."
She couldn't finish the sentence.
"He said if anything ever happened..."
Her breathing became uneven again.
"He told me never to go back."
Damon leaned closer.
"Where is it?"
"A train station."
"Which one?"
"I don't remember."
"It was outside Boston."
"There were old brick buildings..."
"A river..."
"And..."
She squeezed her eyes shut.
Trying to force the memory back.
Then suddenly—
"The key."
She looked at Damon.
"The watch."
He stared.
"What?"
"Eli kept saying..."
She reached toward the scratched steel watch still resting on the table.
"'As long as the watch survives..."
"'The key survives.'"
Damon immediately turned the watch over.
For years...
He had only noticed the engraving.
But now...
Running his thumb around the edge...
He felt something strange.
A tiny seam.
Almost invisible.
Using the tip of a butter knife from the table...
He gently pressed against it.
Click.
The back cover popped open.
Everyone froze.
Hidden inside...
Wrapped tightly in clear plastic...
Was a miniature brass key.
No larger than a thumbnail.
Adriana covered her mouth.
"Oh my God..."
Damon carefully lifted it out.
Engraved on one side...
The number 12.
On the other...
A small symbol.
The same silver crest worn by Dante and his men.
"So Eli really hid it..."
Damon whispered.
But before anyone could speak—
His security chief touched his earpiece.
His expression changed instantly.
"Sir."
"What?"
"We've got movement outside."
"How many?"
"At least eight vehicles."
Damon walked toward the front window.
Black SUVs slowly surrounded the restaurant.
One after another.
Engines idling.
Headlights cutting through the rain.
Far more than Dante had brought.
This wasn't a warning.
This was a retrieval.
A phone vibrated on the table.
It wasn't Damon's.
It wasn't Adriana's.
It belonged to one of the security guards.
Unknown number.
The guard looked at Damon.
He nodded.
"Answer it."
The guard placed it on speaker.
A calm male voice filled the silent restaurant.
"Good evening, Mr. Calas."
Damon recognized nothing about the voice.
Only the confidence behind it.
"You've found the key."
"So you already know."
"I know everything."
"Who are you?"
A soft chuckle.
"The man Eli stole from."
Adriana stopped breathing.
The voice continued.
"I'll make this simple."
"You have one hour."
"Bring me the key."
"And the widow."
"Or every person inside that restaurant dies."
The line went dead.
Silence swallowed the room.
One of the younger guards whispered,
"What do we do?"
Nobody answered.
Because Damon was no longer looking at the phone.
He was looking at Adriana.
She had quietly reached into her apron pocket.
Pulled out a folded letter.
Its edges were worn from being opened countless times.
She handed it to him with trembling fingers.
"Eli told me..."
"...to give you this only if they ever found us."
Damon unfolded it slowly.
He immediately recognized Eli's handwriting.
May you like
The first sentence made his blood run cold.
If you're reading this, Damon... one of us has already been betrayed by someone we trusted most.
