Plot twist

Chapter 5 - THE SECOND SON

I stared at the photograph.

The young man standing between our mothers looked so much like Adrian that my first thought was that it had to be him.

But it wasn't.

He was older.

Maybe twenty-five.

Adrian stepped beside me.

He looked at the photograph.

His face lost all color.

“Where did you get this?”

Vanessa answered quietly.

“Your mother gave it to Thomas.”

Adrian looked at me.

“Your mother knew mine?”

“My mother never told me.”

“Neither did mine.”

I turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

Three words.

Protect him always.

Underneath was a date.

Twenty-eight years ago.

Adrian stared at it.

“That's the year my brother disappeared.”

I looked at him.

“You had a brother?”

He nodded slowly.

“Older half-brother.”

“You never told me.”

“I didn't know him.”

“What happened?”

“My father said he died.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“He didn't die.”

Silence.

Adrian's expression became hard.

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

“Vanessa.”

“I swear.”

She looked at me.

“Your father did.”

My heart tightened.

“My father knew where he was?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father helped hide him.”

Adrian took the photograph from my hand.

“Why would Thomas Bennett hide my brother?”

“Because your brother was the reason all of this started.”

I looked between them.

“What was his name?”

Adrian answered.

“Daniel.”

The name sounded strangely familiar.

Then I remembered something.

A Christmas conversation with my father when I was seventeen.

He had been drinking.

He had looked at an old photograph and whispered, “Daniel.”

I had assumed it was someone from work.

Apparently, it wasn't.

“What happened to him?”

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“Daniel discovered something about your father's business.”

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Adrian's father had built Moretti Capital from a small investment firm into one of Manhattan's most powerful financial groups.

But there had always been rumors.

Deals made behind closed doors.

Partners who disappeared from public life.

People who suddenly sold their shares for reasons nobody understood.

I had never asked Adrian about them.

Now I wished I had.

“Daniel discovered that someone inside the company was moving money.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“How much?”

“Enough to destroy the company.”

“And my father helped him?”

“Thomas helped Daniel escape.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas believed the people responsible would kill him.”

Adrian looked at me.

“And my mother?”

“She helped too.”

I stared at the photograph.

Two women.

One secret.

Two families.

And somehow, me.

“What does any of this have to do with our marriage?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Your father believed the person controlling the money would eventually come after you.”

“Why me?”

“Because you were his daughter.”

“That isn't enough.”

“No.”

Vanessa's voice softened.

“Not by itself.”

She looked at the bracelet.

“Your mother left you something.”

I touched my wrist.

“The bracelet?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at it.

“What's inside?”

“I don't know.”

Vanessa took a small magnifying glass from her purse.

She examined the clasp.

“There.”

She pointed.

The engraved flower wasn't merely decoration.

There was a tiny seam beneath it.

Adrian took out a small knife.

I immediately stopped him.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“If there's something inside, we need to know.”

“I don't want you cutting it.”

“Then we find a jeweler.”

“No.”

I took the bracelet off.

“I'll open it myself.”

My fingers were shaking.

After several attempts, the hidden compartment clicked open.

Inside was a tiny strip of paper.

Only four words.

NOT THE MONEY. THE NAMES.

Adrian stared at it.

“What names?”

I shook my head.

“I don't know.”

Vanessa suddenly looked terrified.

“Close it.”

“What?”

“Close the bracelet.”

Adrian noticed her reaction.

“Why?”

“Because if that's what I think it is, they know she has it.”

“Who?”

Vanessa didn't answer.

Then the hospital lights went out.

The emergency lights came on.

Patients and nurses began moving through the corridor.

Adrian immediately pulled me behind him.

“Marco.”

Marco appeared.

“Already checking.”

A crash sounded somewhere down the hall.

Then another.

A nurse screamed.

Adrian turned to me.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“You don't get to order me around anymore.”

His eyes softened.

“Please.”

That word stopped me.

Adrian disappeared with Marco.

I stood beside Vanessa.

She looked at me.

“You need to leave.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever sent those photographs knows you have the bracelet.”

“How?”

“Because I told them.”

My blood froze.

“You?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't mean to.”

“What did you do?”

“I tried to protect you.”

“How?”

“I gave them a false location.”

She looked toward the dark hallway.

“They weren't supposed to find you here.”

A man's voice came through the darkness.

“They found her anyway.”

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

Adrian appeared at the end of the corridor.

His face was bruised.

“Claire.”

He ran toward us.

Then stopped.

Because behind me stood a man I had never seen before.

He held no weapon.

He simply smiled.

And said,

“Thomas was right about one thing.”

I turned.

The man's eyes fixed on me.

“You really do have your mother's bracelet.”

Adrian moved between us.

“Who are you?”

The man smiled.

“Ask your wife.”

Adrian looked at me.

The man continued.

“Ask her why her father gave her the names.”

Then he walked away.

Marco chased him.

But before the elevator doors closed, the man called out one final sentence.

“Daniel Moretti isn't missing.”

Adrian froze.

“He's your brother.”

The doors shut.

May you like

Adrian turned to me.

And for the first time since I had known him, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
