Chapter 10 - THE GHOST IN HER MEDICAL FILE

Clare’s miscarriage had begun on a Tuesday morning in April.

She remembered the blue mug slipping from her hand, Harrison calling the private hospital, and the young physician who would not meet her eyes. She remembered waking after surgery to find Harrison on a conference call in the corridor.

For three years, she had blamed her body.

Sienna’s note gave that blame a human face.

Rebecca requested the complete medical record. The hospital produced a clean digital chart showing that Dr. Adrian Bell had prescribed a common migraine medication after documenting the pregnancy as not yet confirmed.

Clare knew that was false. The pregnancy had been confirmed six days earlier in the same hospital.

“Where is Dr. Bell?” she asked.

“He died eighteen months ago,” Rebecca said. “Single-car accident in Connecticut.”

Harrison stood near the window of Clare’s hospital room. “Malcolm handled the settlement. The hospital waived all charges and made a donation to the Mercer maternal health initiative.”

“Settlement for what?”

“He said the hospital wanted to avoid a negligence claim.”

“Did you sign anything?”

Harrison closed his eyes briefly. “A confidentiality agreement.”

Clare felt the old grief rearranging itself into anger.

“You signed away my right to know what happened to my pregnancy?”

“Malcolm said you were too fragile to endure litigation.”

“And you agreed because grief made me inconvenient.”

He did not answer.

Eleanor entered carrying a stack of archive scans. Among William’s files was a payment ledger Malcolm had tried to destroy. One transaction, dated two days after Clare’s miscarriage, transferred four hundred thousand dollars from a Mercer House consulting account to Bell Clinical Research.

The authorization carried Harrison’s electronic signature.

“I did not authorize this payment,” Harrison said.

“Your credentials did,” Rebecca replied.

The same system log showed Sienna accessing the archive eight months before she officially joined Mercer House. Her credentials belonged then to a consulting company called Blake Strategic Recovery.

Sienna had not entered their lives seven months ago.

She had been circling them for years.

Federal investigators reconstructed the scheme. Malcolm used compromised medical data to identify pressure
