Chapter 11 - SOMEONE CAME FOR THE LAST BOX OF RECORDS

The storage-unit records should have been boring after police removed evidence.
Chain-of-custody logs.
Inventory.
Digital scans.
The dangerous items were gone.
Still, somebody tried to break into the facility four nights later.
They did not get far.
Motion alarms.
Police.
One suspect ran.
One caught.
Not assassin.
A former North Star warehouse manager named Dennis Hale.
Fifty-eight.
No weapon beyond crowbar.
He said he wanted personal tax records left in unit.
Nobody believed fully.
Under questioning, Hale admitted he had maintained off-book return inventories for Rourke years earlier.
He feared prosecution.
He thought old ledgers contained his signatures.
They did.
Why break in after police search?
He believed copies left.
Panic.
Not threat against Emily.
That distinction relieved.
Then he said something useful.
“There was another box.”
“What box?”
“Ward kept.”
“Where?”
“St. Matthew’s old offsite records.”
Investigators searched with hospital cooperation.
Facility in Glendale.
One box labeled:
EMERGENCY QA 2019.
Inside internal incident reviews.
Marcus Bell.
Two other injector failures.
Both survived.
One nurse had also reported puncture marks.
Her complaint closed.
Name:
Jasmine Reed.
She had left nursing afterward? Not necessarily. She moved hospital.
Investigators found.
Jasmine confirmed.
A patient received injector, no response, backup medication worked.
She documented puncture.
Ward told her device had shipping damage.
No discipline because patient survived.
This proved pattern before Marcus.
Then third incident at another hospital served by North Star.
Again low potency.
Ward's network broader.
Not necessarily targeted killings.
Fraudulent supply.
Marcus tragedy consequence.
Dominic current attack deliberate reuse of method.
This made prosecutors separate:
Old case: fraud/coverup caused death.
Current: intentional tampering to disable Dominic.
Emily appreciated precision.
Media did not.
“Serial poison plot.”
“Medical mafia.”
She stopped reading.
Then Dr. Patel approached with opportunity.
State hospital association forming medication-safety task force.
Would Emily join?
She hesitated.
Public name.
Case.
“Why me?”
“Because you know systems.”
“I know being victim.”
“No.”
Dr. Patel shook.
“You redesigned our emergency-kit verification.”
“You understand nursing workflow.”
“You’re studying quality.”
“Stop reducing expertise to trauma.”
That hit.
Emily accepted.
Task force.
Barcode checks.
Tamper seals.
Dual verification.
Expired-stock destruction.
Anonymous reporting.
Boring.
Important.
Dominic attended none.
Good.
Her identity expanding.
Then Lucy turned six.
Birthday in Phoenix park.
Dominic invited.
No black suits visible.
Carlo not.
Dominic arrived with normal gift.
A microscope.
Lucy wanted unicorn scooter.
She stared.
“This is school.”
Dominic looked crushed.
Emily laughed so hard.
He returned next day with scooter after asking? No, don't overbuy. He exchanged microscope for art set Lucy wanted. Good.
At party, Tasha whispered:
“He’s good with her.”
Emily nodded.
Scary.
Dominic played bad soccer.
Security driver secretly better.
Lucy called him Uncle? Not. “Dominic.”
Later, Dominic helped clean picnic table.
Emily watched billionaire carrying trash bag.
“People would pay to photograph this.”
“Do not.”
Then:
“Emily.”
“What?”
“The question I asked badly.”
She froze.
“Marriage?”
“Yes.”
“Not today.”
“Why?”
“I’m happy.”
“That seems positive.”
“It scares me.”
Dominic waited.
She continued.
“Every time life became stable before, something broke.”
“Ruth.”
“Career.”
“Lucy’s heart.”
“Marcus.”
“I keep expecting payment.”
Dominic’s expression softened.
“Happiness is not invoice.”
She laughed.
“That was good.”
“I prepared.”
Then:
“I won’t ask again until you ask me to.”
That mattered.
No pressure.
Months.
They grew.
Emily finished certificate.
Promoted clinical safety coordinator.
Then hospital task force offered director role in Chicago? Could complicate relocation. Maybe statewide Phoenix. But romance long-distance hard. Perhaps Emily gets national emergency preparedness fellowship in Chicago later. Let's set: A national nonprofit Medical Response Integrity Institute headquartered Chicago offers her director role after task force work, not because Dominic. Search committee.
She is suspicious.
“Did you call?”
Dominic offended.
“No.”
She verifies.
He didn’t.
Role salary strong.
Medication safety systems.
Travel.
Would move Lucy to Chicago.
Cardiology there.
Tasha far.
Emily debated.
Career opportunity real.
Not move for man.
Could accept even if Dominic didn't exist?
She asked herself.
Answer yes.
That was test.
She accepted.
Moved Chicago nine months later.
Own apartment.
Not Dominic’s penthouse.
He offered.
She refused.
He did not sulk.
Lucy started school.
Loved snow for six minutes.
Then hated.
Emily became director of emergency-medication integrity program.
Her life now centered on making sure no one could do to another patient what happened Marcus or Dominic.
Then one evening, she returned apartment.
Door slightly open.
Heart stopped.
She backed away.
Called police.
Dominic only after.
Officers cleared.
Nothing missing except old plastic file box.
Her licensing records.
Copies of 74K19 notes.
Everything digitally preserved.
Still violating.
Who?
Security camera caught man.
Dennis Hale? In custody? Maybe released? Better someone connected to media burglary? We need suspense. Face matched former private investigator hired by Ward’s defense consulting team? That could be serious. But unethical. Let's not overcomplicate active trial already ended. Perhaps a tabloid freelancer looking for story. Police identify via building footage as freelance photographer with prior trespass. He wanted documents to sell. Disturbing but not conspiracy.
Emily felt invaded.
Dominic arrived after police allowed.
He looked around.
“Move to my place.”
“No.”
Immediate.
He closed eyes.
“Temporary.”
“No.”
“Emily.”
“Do not turn fear into real estate.”
He stared.
Then laughed despite himself.
“Fine.”
Security upgraded at her building with her agreement.
Not move.
This echoed autonomy.
Later the intruder arrested for burglary.
No conspiracy.
Important: not every threat is connected.
Emily said:
“I think my nervous system hates that.”
“Why?”
“It wants one villain.”
Dominic nodded.
“Mine too.”
Life is messier.
A week later, Emily asked:
“Ask me again.”
Dominic froze.
“What?”
“The question.”
His eyes widened.
“Now?”
“Yes.”
“In kitchen?”
She smiled.
“Apparently kitchens work.”
He took her hands.
No ring first.
“Emily Carter.”
“I love you when you are angry at me.”
“Which is often.”
“Yes.”
“I love that you do not confuse my money with my worth.”
“I love Lucy.”
“Not as a replacement for anyone.”
“As herself.”
“I love the life you built before me.”
“And the one you rebuilt without me.”
“I would like to build one beside you if you keep choosing.”
Emily cried.
“Yes.”
Then:
“Prenup.”
Dominic laughed.
“Already drafted.”
“Of course.”
May you like
Happy did not mean unguarded.
It meant both people knew exactly what doors remained theirs.
