Chapter 5 - THE LEGAL WARFARE

The legal battle became a blood sport.
With the evidence of the shell corporations and the blatant violation of his non-compete agreement, a judge granted our request for an emergency asset freeze. Everything Logan had—his checking accounts, his investment portfolios, the offshore accounts we had tracked down—was instantly locked. He couldn't buy a cup of coffee without court approval.
The pressure began to crack him, and his desperation manifested in dangerous ways.
It was a Tuesday night, exactly one month after the disastrous birthday dinner. I was working late at my dining room table, reviewing the depositions scheduled for the following week. The house was quiet, the security system armed.
At 11:15 PM, the heavy thud of a fist pounding against my front door shattered the silence.
I didn't jump. I calmly closed my laptop, walked into the hallway, and checked the security camera feed on my phone. Logan was standing on the porch. He looked awful. He had lost weight, his clothes were wrinkled, and his eyes had a frantic, manic gleam to them. He was holding a thick manila envelope.
I walked to the door, keeping the deadbolt locked, and spoke through the heavy wood. “You are violating a restraining order, Logan. The police have already been notified by the automated system.”
“Open the door!” he shouted, kicking the bottom panel. “I need to talk to you! This has gone far enough! You’ve ruined me! My lawyer dropped me because I can't pay his retainer. My credit cards are declining. You have to lift the freeze!”
“The court ordered the freeze, not me,” I replied calmly. “And it stays in place until you return the four hundred thousand dollars you stole.”
“I don't have it!” he screamed, his voice cracking. “It’s gone! The investments tanked, the crypto crashed! It’s gone! If you keep pushing this criminal case, I’m going to prison!”
“That sounds like the appropriate venue for a thief,” I said, feeling absolutely zero pity.
“Look at this!” he yelled, waving the envelope frantically at the security camera. “I have leverage! I have files on the firm. Tax irregularities! If I go down, I am taking you and the whole damn company with me! I’ll send this to the IRS tomorrow unless you drop the suit!”
I leaned my forehead against the cool wood of the door and sighed. His arrogance was truly boundless, but his intelligence was severely lacking.
“Logan, I have run the accounting for that firm for twelve years. We are audited annually by an independent third party. We don't have tax irregularities. Whatever you think you fabricated in that envelope is useless. You have nothing.”
“I’ll tell the press you’re unhinged! I’ll tell them you framed me!” he ranted, completely losing his grip on reality.
I heard the distant wail of police sirens cutting through the night air.
“You can tell them whatever you want from a jail cell,” I said, stepping back from the door.

Three minutes later, two squad cars pulled onto my lawn, their red and blue lights painting the front of my house in chaotic bursts of color. I watched through the window as four officers drew their weapons and ordered Logan to the ground. He screamed my name, cursing me, thrashing against the handcuffs as they dragged him away.
I went to the kitchen, poured myself a glass of red wine, and drank it slowly, watching the taillights of the police cruisers disappear down the street. The monster wasn't just defeated; he had caged himself.
