Plot twist

Chapter 8 - THE THIRTY-TWO-MILLION-DOLLAR WIFE

I laughed.

Nobody else did.

That made me laugh harder.

Thirty-two million dollars.

I had twelve hundred dollars in savings.

A maxed credit card from Marcus’s “temporary” unemployment two years earlier.

And a pair of restaurant shoes held together by glue.

Carlo watched me.

“It is real.”

“Where?”

“That I don’t know.”

“Of course.”

I wiped tears from my eyes.

“Why would my father put thirty-two million dollars under my name and never tell me?”

“Because if you spent it, Matteo would know Daniel had taken it.”

“So he turned me into a vault.”

Carlo winced.

“Yes.”

Another dead man deciding for me.

I was tired of them.

Dante spoke quietly.

“You do not have to touch the money.”

I looked at him.

“First sensible thing anyone has said.”

Carlo gave us one final piece.

Anthony carried the signet ring.

Giuseppe knew the route Anthony used to return from Canada.

And Marcus knew where Victor planned to meet Matteo.

All three threads converged at Pier 41.

That night.

Not through some mysterious summons.

Through the ledger.

Marcus finally decoded Victor’s last instruction because it was written in the insurance claim shorthand he used at work.

PIER 41 — 23:30.

M. TRANSFER.

A. EXCHANGE.

Mia transfer.

Anthony exchange.

I stared at Marcus.

“You were supposed to bring me.”

His face collapsed.

“Yes.”

“In exchange for Anthony?”

“Yes.”

“Were you going to?”

He looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.”

I believed him.

That was somehow worse than a clean no.

“You beat me yesterday.”

“Yes.”

“Then today you planned to decide whether to hand me to a murderer.”

Tears filled his eyes.

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

He looked at me.

That was the whole difference.

Fear explained things.

It did not excuse them.

Dante asked, “Why would Victor trust Marcus to deliver her?”

“Because I already had once.”

The room went still.

I stared.

“What?”

Marcus shook his head quickly.

“Not physically.”

“Explain.”

“Three months ago, Victor asked where you would be on a certain Tuesday.”

My stomach turned.

“The night I worked the private wine dinner.”

“Yes.”

Dante’s face hardened.

“That was my dinner.”

Marcus nodded.

Victor had been watching Romano’s because Anthony occasionally used it as a meeting point.

He wanted to know whether I had contact with Dante.

Marcus gave him my schedule.

That was why Dante’s people had begun questioning Marcus.

Answer one.

Open two.

My marriage had already placed me inside the Castellano investigation months before Dante saw my bruises.

At Pier 41, Dante wanted me nowhere near the exchange.

I said no.

He looked furious.

I said it again.

“No.”

“Mia.”

“If thirty-two million dollars is under my name, Matteo expects me.”

“That is exactly why you should not be there.”

“And every man in my life keeps saying danger means I should surrender the decision.”

His face changed.

“You’re right.”

It came quickly.

Almost too quickly.

Then he added, “I hate that you’re right.”

“Good.”

Marco arranged the plan.

Police could not be trusted completely because names in Dad’s ledger included officers.

Instead, copies of everything went to a federal prosecutor and two journalists before we moved.

Giuseppe insisted.

“Daniel taught me.”

At eleven thirty, Pier 41 was almost empty.

Snow had begun falling over the river.

Victor Hale stood beneath a loading light.

Beside him was an older man.

Tall.

Silver hair.

Carlo’s face with subtle differences.

Ten fingers.

Original Castellano signet ring.

Matteo.

Anthony knelt several feet away.

Alive.

Bruised.

Furious.

“I hate Montreal,” he said when he saw Dante.

Carlo had called that correctly.

Victor held a gun.

Matteo did not.

Marcus walked beside me.

Not touching.

Dante and Marco remained out of sight.

Victor smiled at his son.

“You brought her.”

Marcus’s face tightened.

“You lied about my mother.”

Victor’s smile faded.

“This isn’t the time.”

“It is for me.”

Matteo looked at me.

“So Daniel’s little bank account finally learned what she owns.”

“I don’t own anything of yours.”

“Thirty-two million dollars says otherwise.”

“Then take it.”

He smiled.

“It does not work that way.”

Of course.

Dad had structured the money through bearer bonds held by a trust requiring my signature to liquidate.

No signature.

No money.

“Where are the bonds?”

I asked.

Matteo’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know.”

“No.”

Victor looked at Marcus.

“You said she had the necklace.”

My blood chilled.

The locket.

Again.

The micro-card was not its only secret.

Victor stared at my neck.

I had left the real locket with Marco.

What I wore now was Giuseppe’s dead wife’s similar pendant.

He did not know.

Good.

Marcus said, “She doesn’t have it.”

Victor’s face hardened.

“You were supposed to make sure.”

There.

Marcus had failed him.

Whether intentionally or through incompetence did not matter tonight.

Anthony laughed from the pavement.

“Victor, you always did mistake abused dogs for loyal ones.”

Victor struck him.

Dante nearly stepped from hiding.

Marco held him back.

Matteo looked at Anthony.

“The ring.”

Anthony spat blood.

“No.”

“You will die for an object?”

“No.”

He smiled.

“I’ll die because I’m tired of you asking stupid questions.”

Then Marcus moved.

He stepped between Victor and me.

Victor’s face changed.

“Move.”

“No.”

I stared at Marcus’s back.

Do not confuse one decent act with redemption, I told myself.

But see it accurately.

He was choosing something.

Too late for our marriage.

Not too late for himself.

Victor raised the gun.

“You think she’ll forgive you?”

“No.”

Marcus’s voice was steady.

“She shouldn’t.”

For the first time, I believed he understood.

Victor’s finger tightened.

Dante stepped out.

“So shoot someone your own size.”

Everything changed at once.

Marco’s men emerged.

Matteo backed toward the warehouse.

Anthony dropped sideways.

Victor swung his gun.

Marcus tackled his arm.

A shot went into the river.

Dante reached them first.

He kicked the weapon away.

No execution.

No mafia vengeance.

He looked at Victor on the ground and then at me.

Choice.

Again.

I understood what he was asking.

“Alive,” I said.

Dante nodded.

“Alive.”

Matteo tried to run.

Anthony stuck out one leg and sent him crashing face-first onto the concrete.

Even bleeding, he looked pleased.

Marco secured both men.

Then Anthony removed something from inside his coat.

The cracked Castellano signet ring.

He handed it to Dante.

“Your brother died for this.”

Dante’s eyes filled.

Anthony looked at me.

“Your father died because he refused to surrender you.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“Matteo offered Daniel a deal.”

The pier went silent.

“Return the money and give him access to your trust identity.”

My stomach dropped.

“What did Dad say?”

Anthony smiled faintly.

“Something impolite about his mother.”

That sounded like Dad too.

Then Anthony reached into his coat again.

This time he removed a small bank envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note from Daniel.

Mia chooses what happens to the money.

Nobody else.

My throat tightened.

Finally.

One choice my father had left to me.

Then Anthony looked at Marcus.

His expression changed.

“There’s one more thing.”

Marcus went still.

Anthony’s voice became quieter.

“Victor never sent you to marry Mia.”

I stared.

“What?”

Marcus looked confused.

Anthony continued.

“He sent you to meet her.”

Victor swore from the ground.

Anthony smiled without humor.

“The marriage was yours.”

The revelation did not save anything.

But it changed one part of the past.

Marcus looked at me.

“I told you.”

I held his gaze.

“Yes.”

Hope flickered.

I killed it gently.

“And you still hurt me.”

His eyes dropped.

“I know.”

Snow fell between us.

The truth was finally becoming complete.

Not simple.

Complete.

And for the first time, I knew exactly what I wanted the next morning to look like.

Marcus somewhere else.

Victor and Matteo facing public charges.

My father’s evidence out of private hands.

May you like

The thirty-two million no longer hidden.

And me making decisions nobody could rename as protection.
