Plot twist

Chapter 7 - THE BROTHER NO ONE MENTIONED

We found Dad in the hospital parking garage.

He was standing beside an old maintenance vehicle.

And he wasn't alone.

A young man stood beside him.

Maybe twenty-five.

Dark hair.

Thin scar beneath his left eye.

Lily was holding his hand.

She wore a red coat.

My coat was around her shoulders.

I stopped breathing.

Dad looked at me.

“This is him.”

The young man looked at me.

I recognized his eyes.

Not because I had seen them recently.

Because I had seen them every morning in the mirror when I was a child.

My brother.

The one I had never known existed.

Jessica whispered, “Who is he?”

Dad answered.

“Ethan.”

The young man stepped forward.

“I didn't know whether you'd believe me.”

I stared at him.

“Where have you been?”

His jaw tightened.

“Everywhere they couldn't find me.”

Lily ran toward me.

I knelt despite the pain.

She wrapped her arms around me.

“You came.”

I held her tightly.

“I promised.”

She pointed at my bandage.

“You got hurt.”

“I'm okay.”

She shook her head.

“No, you're not.”

I smiled.

“Still bossy.”

She smiled for the first time.

Then she pulled something from her pocket.

A child's drawing.

This one showed four people.

Me.

Lily.

Ethan.

And someone else.

A woman.

I looked at Ethan.

“Who is she?”

He didn't answer.

Dad did.

“Her name was Sarah.”

My heart stopped.

My former handler.

The woman we believed was dead.

Lily whispered, “She saved me.”

Reed stepped closer.

“Where is Sarah?”

Ethan looked at him.

“Dead.”

“But you just said—”

“Not Sarah Collins.”

He looked at me.

“My mother.”

I stared at him.

My mind couldn't process it.

“Your mother?”

He nodded.

“She used Sarah Collins as an alias.”

I looked at Lily.

“Then who was my handler?”

“Your handler knew my mother.”

Reed's expression tightened.

“This gets worse.”

Ethan nodded.

“It does.”

He reached inside his jacket.

He removed a small velvet pouch.

Inside was a necklace.

An old gold pendant.

I recognized it immediately.

Mom had one exactly like it.

My hand trembled.

“Where did you get that?”

“From my mother.”

Dad looked away.

Mom had finally followed us downstairs.

When she saw the necklace, she stopped.

Her face collapsed.

“Ethan.”

He looked at her.

“Hello, Mother.”

Jessica stared.

“You're his mother?”

Mom began crying.

“I thought you were dead.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

“You let me believe that.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

Dad stepped between them.

“That was my fault.”

Ethan laughed without humor.

“Of course it was.”

I looked at Dad.

“Tell me everything.”

He shook his head.

“Not here.”

“No.”

I pointed at Lily.

“She has been hunted because of your secrets.”

Dad looked at the child.

His face softened.

“I know.”

“Then talk.”

He finally did.

Twenty-five years earlier, Dad had worked for a logistics company handling international medical shipments.

One shipment had been hijacked.

Inside were children being moved through a trafficking network disguised as humanitarian transport.

Dad discovered it.

He tried to expose it.

The people behind it threatened his family.

So he made a terrible compromise.

He signed one authorization.

One shipment.

He believed it would buy time.

Instead, it gave Elias access to dozens of children.

Mom had been pregnant with Ethan.

When the threats escalated, she hid him.

She told everyone the baby had died.

Then she disappeared with him.

Dad believed they were dead.

Until years later.

I looked at Ethan.

“How did you survive?”

“My mother raised me under another name.”

“And Lily?”

Ethan looked at the girl.

“She was one of the children my mother rescued.”

I understood.

The network had not ended.

It had simply changed names.

Ethan reached into the pouch again.

He removed a photograph.

It showed Sarah.

Beside her stood Elias.

And between them was Dad.

I stared at the image.

Dad looked younger.

But unmistakable.

“You said you weren't working with him.”

“I wasn't.”

“Then why were you together?”

Dad closed his eyes.

“Because I was undercover.”

Reed stepped forward.

“Why wasn't that in our files?”

Dad looked at him.

“Because the person running the operation was inside the government.”

Silence.

Reed's radio suddenly crackled.

“Agent Reed, we have an urgent alert.”

“What?”

“Someone accessed the federal archive.”

“Which file?”

A pause.

Then:

“Nightfall.”

My stomach dropped.

Reed looked at me.

“Your classified identity has been exposed.”

Ethan grabbed Lily's hand.

“Then we need to leave.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He stared toward the hospital entrance.

“Because the people who know who you really are aren't coming for the files.”

May you like

He held up the old necklace.

“They're coming for everyone connected to you.”
