Chapter 12 - SCARLET’S WEDDING RING DISAPPEARED

Scarlet called me from Boston at seven in the morning.
“My ring is gone.”
I nearly laughed because missing jewelry had become dangerous genre in family stories.
“Where?”
“If I knew, it wouldn’t be gone.”
Fair.
Daniel traveling.
Elias thirteen.
Scarlet had removed ring during hospital shift, placed in locker pouch.
Gone after.
Why call me?
Because hospital security said locker access showed Elias’s visitor badge entered staff corridor previous afternoon when he came after school.
My stomach tightened.
“Did he take it?”
“I have not asked.”
Good.
“Where is he?”
“School.”
“Does Daniel know?”
“No.”
“Why me?”
“Because I’m afraid.”
Of what?
“That Elias is reacting to marriage.”
We both remembered his questions.
Was Mom and Dad possible?
Did Daniel only exist because hidden letter?
He liked Daniel.
But adolescents hold contradictions.
“Do not accuse.”
“I know.”
“I’m coming.”
“Robert, you don’t have to.”
“I want.”
At hospital, security reviewed.
Elias entered corridor but accompanied nurse who brought him to Scarlet’s office.
No locker access.
Camera angle later showed cleaning contractor bag near locker.
Ring maybe accidentally swept? Investigation.
Then Scarlet got text.
Unknown number:
LOOK IN YOUR SON’S BACKPACK.
My blood turned cold.
She called police/security immediately.
No private search? As parent, she could check, but better school and police. We informed school.
Elias was pulled to office.
Confused.
Backpack opened with him present.
Ring inside side pocket.
Scarlet went white.
Elias stared.
“That’s not mine.”
“I know,” Scarlet said.
Did she?
I did.
His shock looked real but appearances not proof.
Police handled.
Security records.
Who had access to backpack?
School hallway.
After-school hospital visit.
A volunteer named Claire Mason had helped direct Elias through hospital lobby.
Camera showed Claire near backpack unattended ten minutes.
Why?
Claire was former patient parent.
Her child had been treated in Scarlet’s program.
She had filed complaint alleging Scarlet’s research team mishandled consent documentation.
Not substantiated but under review.
She blamed Scarlet for complaint dismissal.
This had nothing to do with Robert.
For once.
Police found she sent text using prepaid service? Eventually digital evidence tied device? Keep plausible.
Claire admitted placing ring after confrontation plan.
She wanted Scarlet investigated for family instability? Wait motive odd. Better she wanted to discredit Scarlet by creating theft accusation against son? That's irrational. Let's refine: she thought Scarlet ignored concerns, wanted scare her. She took ring impulsively, then planted it in backpack to redirect suspicion and create chaos. Legal consequences.
No violence.
No grand villain.
A grieving/angry parent made terrible choices.
Scarlet was shaken.
Elias furious.
“You thought I took?”
Scarlet cried.
“I was afraid you might have.”
He looked wounded.
“Why?”
“Because you’ve been angry about Daniel.”
“So?”
She closed eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
Elias looked at me.
“You thought?”
“No.”
Scarlet glanced.
Honest.
“I thought possible,” I corrected.
His face fell.
Important not lie.
“I also thought we needed evidence.”
He nodded slowly.
Then:
“Adults think bad fast.”
“Yes.”
That became healing.
Scarlet apologized specifically:
“I let fear connect your feelings to a behavior without evidence.”
Elias:
“Okay.”
Not immediate warmth.
He needed time.
Daniel returned.
He did not turn into angry protector.
He asked Elias:
“Want talk?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
Two days later Elias approached.
“Were you mad ring gone?”
“Yes.”
“At me?”
“No.”
“Because you know?”
“I knew there wasn’t evidence.”
“That’s what Dad says.”
“Your dad is annoying.”
Elias smiled.
Then:
“Do you think I want you gone?”
Daniel thought.
“Sometimes maybe.”
Elias looked shocked.
“You do?”
“You’ve had moments you wish family simpler.”
“Yes.”
“That’s not same as wanting me hurt.”
“No.”
Good.
Nuance.
Scarlet’s hospital also faced public attention because Claire’s prior complaint.
Media attempted frame:
PROMINENT DOCTOR’S FAMILY CAUGHT IN HOSPITAL THEFT DRAMA.
Hospital released minimal.
Police clarified juvenile not suspect after evidence.
We protected Elias.
Scarlet publicly addressed research-consent review separately.
Important.
No mixing personal theft with professional complaint.
Independent review found consent procedures compliant but communication with families could improve.
Scarlet accepted.
No defensive.
I watched and recognized parallel to Chapter & Brew.
Competent people can still build systems where complaints feel unwelcome.
Scarlet called later.
“I hate that I’m you.”
I laughed.
“Excuse me?”
“One family said my team was intimidating.”
“Were you?”
“Probably.”
“Doctors.”
“Shut up.”
She sighed.
“I thought because science was correct, communication was enough.”
“Welcome.”
“I do not need you enjoying.”
“Too late.”
She improved family advisory board.
Not because Claire’s theft justified her actions—it didn’t.
But unrelated complaint had useful truth.
Again.
Multiple truths.
Then Nora and I reached four years.
We had not married.
Not because fear.
Because she liked own home.
I liked mine.
We spent four nights together, three apart.
People confused.
Good.
One evening she said:
“I think I want marry you.”
I dropped book.
“What?”
Nora laughed.
“Very flattering reaction.”
“Are you proposing?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She glared.
“Bad word.”
“Sorry.”
Then:
“I think I want it too.”
We sat.
No rush.
We told Elias later.
He was fourteen by time engaged.
He grinned.
“Finally.”
“Excuse me?”
“You old.”
“Leave.”
Scarlet congratulated.
Daniel:
“Welcome to strange husbands club.”
I said:
“We are not club.”
“We have group chat.”
I froze.
“What?”
He laughed.
No group chat.
Probably.
Nora and I married at city hall.
Twenty people.
Elias stood beside me.
Scarlet and Daniel attended.
No media.
After vows, Elias said:
“Now Nora stepmom?”
Nora answered:
“If you want use word.”
He thought.
“Nora.”
She laughed.
“Perfect.”
Then he hugged her.
Family roles asked.
Not assigned.
Later, Scarlet’s recovered ring went into a small dish at home.
She still removed for hospital.
One day Elias saw.
“You trust?”
Scarlet:
“The ring?”
“Me.”
She stopped.
“Yes.”
“Even though thought?”
“I learned.”
He nodded.
Then:
“Good.”
That entire crisis began with jewelry missing and ended without a marriage collapsing.
Progress across generations.
Same fear.
Faster evidence.

Better repair.
No one needed twenty-one months.
