The room grew suffocatingly cold as Owen quietly sat on the rug, tightly clutching his mother's dress, sensing the heavy adult secrets fracturing the air around him.
"The police found his bike on Route 9," Hannah said. "They claimed he lost control on a wet curve. But Thomas had called me ten minutes before he left the office. He said his father had threatened to destroy everyone he loved if those files ever left the building."
"Why didn't you tell us?!" Frank suddenly yelled, his voice cracking with a decade of buried guilt. "You came home pregnant, refused to give a name, and let us think you were just a reckless girl ruining her life!"
"Because Thomas's father came to my apartment the morning after the funeral," Hannah said, her voice deadly calm. "He brought a copy of your employment contract, Dad. He told me that if I ever spoke his son's name to the police, or if I tried to claim any connection to Thomas, he would make sure you went to prison for corporate manslaughter. He said he would ensure the family was left completely destitute."
Diane covered her face with her hands, the truth hitting her like a physical blow. "So you let us throw you out... to protect your father?"
"I asked you to trust me," Hannah said, a single tear finally sliding down her cheek. "I begged you to give me time. But you cared more about the neighbors' whispers and the family name than you did about your own daughter. You wanted a clean house, Frank. So I gave you one."
She stood up, reaching into her purse to pull out the small USB drive wrapped in a napkin. She placed it squarely on top of the old photograph.
"Thomas's father died in a nursing home last month," Hannah announced. "Before he died, his conscience finally caught up with him. He left a safety deposit box for me. Inside was the original hard drive Thomas took to his office that night, along with a signed confession detailing the bribery of the local police chief who handled the accident report."

Frank stared at the flash drive as if it were a live grenade.
"The federal investigators are opening the case tomorrow morning," Hannah said. "The plant is going to be shut down, and every executive involved is being subpoenaed. Including you, Dad."
