Part 4: The New Margin
The next morning, the sun finally broke through the heavy gray clouds over Chicago.
I sat in my mother's kitchen, the smell of fresh lavender and warm tea filling the quiet house.
My mother, Linda, handed me a printed copy of the final financial redistribution order signed by Judge Eleanor Thornton at sunrise.
"He's being forced to liquidate his remaining personal shares to pay the back taxes, Emma," my mother said, sitting beside me and gently touching my shoulder.
I looked down at the paper.

Daniel had believed a pregnant wife was a weakness, a burden he could easily discard to pursue his own vanity with a younger, envious woman.

My phone buzzed with a final text from Marcus: The receivership is complete. Dock 7 is under our name. He’s out, Emma.
I smiled, taking a slow sip of my tea as my baby kicked softly against my palm.
The white dress was gone, the marriage was dead, and the courthouse steps were far behind me.
But as I looked out at the bright, clean city outside, I knew that the biggest lie had finally been brought down by the quietest truth.
