Plot twist

Chapter 6 - THE MAN BEHIND THE COMMAND CONSOLE

I stared at the photograph.

The room felt suddenly colder.

“Who is he?”

Pike smiled.

“You don't remember?”

“No.”

“You should.”

My father stepped forward.

“Enough games.”

Pike looked at him.

“You're still protecting her.”

“Yes.”

Pike laughed.

“You should have told her years ago.”

“Told me what?”

Pike looked at me.

“The man behind you that night was Admiral Richard Hale.”

My father's face changed.

“I knew Hale gave the original order,” I said.

Pike shook his head.

“No.”

He tapped the photograph.

“Hale gave the order to abort.”

“Then why was he behind me?”

“Because he was trying to stop someone else from using your command access.”

I frowned.

“Who?”

Pike leaned back.

“Your father.”

I turned.

My father looked stunned.

“That is impossible.”

Pike smiled.

“You don't know the whole story.”

I looked at him.

“Then tell me.”

He explained that Silent Echo had been compromised before the mission began.

Someone had inserted a false command sequence into the communications system.

The sequence would have redirected the team into a dead zone.

Hale discovered it.

He tried to stop it.

My father received the abort order.

But I overrode the system.

Not because I ignored command.

Because I discovered the false sequence.

I had unknowingly saved the team from an ambush.

Pike admitted he had been the one who created the false sequence.

“Why?”

“To force the mission to fail.”

“Why?”

“Because someone wanted the team gone.”

“Who?”

Pike looked at my father.

Then at Marcus.

Then at me.

“Your brother knows.”

Marcus went pale.

“No.”

Pike smiled.

“You've been carrying the wrong guilt for fifteen years.”

Marcus stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

“You think you buried the report to protect Dad.”

“I did.”

“No.”

Pike leaned forward.

“You buried it because Dad ordered you to.”

My father looked at Marcus.

“That's not true.”

Marcus turned toward him.

“You told me the report had to disappear.”

“I told you to secure it.”

“You said nobody could see it.”

“Because it was classified.”

“You said Elena's name could never appear.”

My father closed his eyes.

“I was protecting her.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You never told me that.”

“I thought you understood.”

“I thought you were ashamed of her.”

My father's face fell.

Marcus continued.

“I spent fifteen years thinking you wanted me to replace her.”

Pike smiled.

“That misunderstanding kept everyone exactly where I needed them.”

I looked at him.

“You manipulated my family.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because families are easier to control than institutions.”

I hated that answer.

Not because it was dramatic.

Because it sounded believable.

Pike had watched us destroy ourselves.

He had only needed to push.

Then he placed another photograph on the table.

This one showed my father speaking with a civilian contractor.

The contractor was the same man from the earlier photograph.

I recognized him.

“That's Richard Hale.”

Pike shook his head.

“No.”

He turned the photograph over.

A name was written there.

Nathan Vance.

My father's older brother.

I stared.

“My uncle?”

My father went still.

“Nathan died before you were born.”

Pike nodded.

“That's what the records say.”

I looked at him.

“Are you saying my uncle was alive during Silent Echo?”

“No.”

Pike smiled.

“I'm saying someone used his identity.”

Brooks entered the room.

“We found the source of the forged signatures.”

He placed a file on the table.

A fingerprint report.

The prints belonged to a former Navy contractor.

The same man appeared in Pike's records.

His name was Daniel Cross.

But he had another identity.

Nathan Vance.

My father's face went white.

“That's impossible.”

Brooks shook his head.

“It's not.”

The mystery widened.

Someone had impersonated my uncle for decades.

Someone with access to Navy records.

Someone who knew my family.

Someone who had helped manipulate Silent Echo.

Then Marcus said something that changed everything.

“I know him.”

I turned.

“How?”

“He was at my promotion ceremony.”

My father stared.

“Who?”

Marcus looked terrified.

“Daniel Cross.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

I looked at Pike.

“Why was he there?”

Pike smiled.

“Because he wasn't there for Marcus.”

He pointed at me.

“He was there for you.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why?”

Pike leaned back.

“Because you were the only person who could expose him.”

The room went silent.

Then my father whispered,

“What did he want?”

Pike answered,

“The original Silent Echo archive.”

Brooks looked at me.

“And you still have it.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Pike smiled.

“You do.”

He pointed toward my black garment bag.

“The archive was never in the Pentagon.”

I looked down.

The garment bag had a hidden inner compartment.

I had never opened it.

My father saw my expression.

“Don't.”

I reached for the zipper.

Marcus grabbed my hand.

“Wait.”

I looked at him.

He whispered,

“If that archive is what Pike says it is, opening it may change everything.”

I nodded.

Then I opened the compartment.

Inside was a thin black folder.

Stamped with a seal I hadn't seen in fifteen years.

I opened it.

The first page contained a single handwritten sentence.

THE PERSON WHO SAVED SILENT ECHO WAS NOT ELENA VANCE.

I turned the page.

The next line made my blood run cold.

IT WAS THOMAS VANCE.

I looked at my father.

May you like

He whispered,

“I never told you.”
