Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER STOPPED LOOKING

Emma called three days later.
No introduction.
No explanation.
Just one sentence.
“Are you Claire?”
“Yes.”
“I need to know Lily is safe.”
“She is.”
Emma exhaled.
“Thank God.”
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere I can see you.”
I looked out the window.
Nothing.
“Why did you disappear?”
“Because Daniel threatened me.”
“With what?”
“My life.”
I closed my eyes.
“What did he want?”
“The baby.”
“Why?”
“He believed Lily was worth millions.”
“Why?”
Emma was silent.
Then she said:
“Because Lily wasn't just my daughter.”
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?”
“She was connected to an inheritance.”
I understood.
Redbrook.
The money.
The property.
The trust.
“What inheritance?”
“Her grandfather's.”
“Who?”
“My father.”
I froze.
Emma continued.
“My father was wealthy.”
“How wealthy?”
“Enough that Daniel wanted his money.”
“Why would Lily inherit it?”
“Because my father left everything to my first surviving grandchild.”
I swallowed.
“And Daniel knew.”
“Yes.”
“So he switched the babies.”
“He tried.”
“But he failed.”
“Not completely.”
I closed my eyes.
“Emily?”
“Yes.”
“Why was she adopted?”
“Because Daniel needed Lily to appear dead.”
My stomach twisted.
“He planned to claim the inheritance through another arrangement.”
“Exactly.”
“Then why did he pay you?”
“To disappear.”
I remembered the $1.25 million.
“You took the money?”
Emma's voice cracked.
“I did.”
“Why?”
“To keep my daughter alive.”
I couldn't blame her.
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Emma.”
“If Daniel knows where I am, he'll come after me.”
“Daniel is under investigation.”
“That's why I called.”
“What?”
“He's not finished.”
I stood.
“What do you mean?”
“There is another account.”
“Where?”
“Switzerland.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“Redbrook has an offshore account.”
“Do you have proof?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“With me.”
“Then give it to Agent Cole.”
“I will.”
“Emma, please.”
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“I want to see Lily.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“You can.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“She isn't my daughter biologically anymore.”
“She is.”
Emma cried.
“She belongs with you.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“She belongs with both of us.”
Three days later, we met in a church parking lot.
Emma stepped out of an old sedan.
She looked thinner than she had in the photographs.
Older.
Exhausted.
But when she saw Lily, everything in her face changed.
Lily stood beside me.
She looked at Emma.
“Who are you?”
Emma dropped to her knees.
“I’m Emma.”
Lily smiled.
“Do I know you?”
Emma cried.
“You did once.”
Lily looked confused.
I knelt beside her.
“This is someone who helped keep you safe.”
Lily looked at Emma.
“Are you my friend?”
Emma laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
Lily hugged her.
Emma broke down completely.
I stood there watching them.
There was no jealousy.
No anger.
Only sadness for everything that had been stolen from all of us.
Emma finally stood.
She handed Agent Cole a flash drive.
“This contains everything.”
Cole took it.
“What is on it?”
“Accounts.”
“Which accounts?”
“Daniel's.”
“Anything else?”
“Names.”
“Whose names?”
“Everyone who helped him.”
That changed the investigation.
The flash drive contained years of payments.
Doctors.
Lawyers.
Private investigators.
Hospital employees.
Adoption intermediaries.
And one final name.
Eleanor Whitmore.
I stared at it.
“No.”
Emma nodded.
“She knew.”
My heart sank.
“She knew about the babies?”
“Yes.”
I couldn't believe it.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel needed her to keep you away from Lily.”
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It does if Eleanor believed Lily was proof of your betrayal.”
I remembered Thanksgiving.
The way Eleanor had screamed.
The certainty.
The hatred.
She had been given a story.
A story Daniel had constructed.
But she had never asked whether it was true.
The investigation moved quickly after that.
Daniel was arrested two weeks later.
Charges included fraud, conspiracy, money laundering, identity fraud, and obstruction.
The fake DNA report became evidence.
So did the financial records.
So did the hospital documents.
And so did the flash drive.
Daniel finally admitted enough to confirm what we already knew.
He had discovered Emma's inheritance.
He had learned about the trust.
He had arranged for the hospital records to be altered.
He had attempted to manipulate the children's identities.
And when I became suspicious, he created the fake DNA report.
His goal was simple.
Make me look unfaithful.
Destroy my credibility.
Take Lily.
Then disappear before anyone discovered the financial scheme.
He never expected me to notice the laboratory didn't exist.
He never expected Agent Cole.
And he never expected Emma to survive long enough to expose him.
But there was one final battle.
Custody.
The court had to determine where Lily and Emily belonged.
The answer was complicated.
Biologically, Emily was mine.
Biologically, Lily was Emma's.
But emotionally, Lily was my daughter.
And Emily had spent five years with the Harpers.
No judge was going to tear two children away from the families who had raised them without careful consideration.
So I made a decision.
I didn't fight to take Emily.
I fought to know her.
And I fought for Lily to know Emma.
The court agreed.
A new family structure was created.
Not perfect.
Not traditional.
May you like
But honest.
And for the first time in years, honesty felt like enough.
