THE DOCKSIDE RECKONING / Chapter 6 / 8

Chapter 7 - THE HOLDING CELL

The Cook County Detention Center smelled of bleach, damp concrete, and institutional despair.

I sat in the secure visitation booth on the other side of a thick pane of reinforced glass, staring at the empty metal stool on the opposite side.

The door at the back of the visitation room clicked open.

Julian walked in.

He wore a bright orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed loosely in front of him. His hair was slightly disheveled, and the arrogant, polished veneer he had worn around our suburban home for seven years was entirely gone.

He sat down on the metal stool and picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver.

I picked up mine.

For a long time, neither of us spoke. We just looked at each other through the smudged glass.

“You shouldn't have gone into the study, Evelyn,” Julian finally said, his voice flat and robotic.

“Why, Julian?” I asked, keeping my voice remarkably calm. “Because you forgot to clean out your trophy room before you told your lawyer to clean out my house?”

Julian let out a dry, humorless chuckle, shaking his head. “You always were smarter than you let on. Your father just kept you buried under domestic routines so you wouldn't notice.”

“My father didn't bury me,” I replied, looking directly into his cold, calculating eyes—eyes I had foolishly believed loved me for seven years. “You did. You built a cage out of eighty-five thousand dollars a year, guilt trips, and fake grocery budgets, and you expected me to stay in it forever.”

Julian’s jaw tightened. “The Sterling empire will rise again, Evelyn. Arresting me doesn't change the fact that your father’s shipping lanes are vulnerable. We have judges. We have politicians. When I get out of here—”

“You aren't getting out,” I interrupted.

He blinked. “What are you talking about? My grandfather’s lawyers are already filing motions for bail—”

“Your grandfather’s lawyers can't help you with federal treason charges,” I said quietly. “Clara filed the complete forensic audit of your corporate accounts with the U.S. Attorney’s office an hour ago. You didn't just steal trade secrets; you used interstate wire fraud to funnel kickbacks through international terrorist-linked shell companies to hide the Sterling family’s assets.”

The color drained entirely from Julian’s face. The orange jumpsuit suddenly looked three sizes too big for him.

“You... you wouldn't,” he stammered, the panic finally cracking his stoic facade. “We have a child, Evelyn! We’re married!”

“We were never married, Julian,” I said, resting my hand against the glass right where his face was. “You were just playing a part. And the play is over.”

I set my receiver down on the metal console.

Julian shouted something through the glass, his mouth moving frantically behind the thick pane, but I didn't hear him.

I turned away, walking out of the visitation room and into the crisp Chicago autumn air.
