Chapter 6 - THE FOLDED PASSPORT

The cold steel against my throat burned.

I stood perfectly still, my hands instinctively hovering over my pregnant belly, refusing to let Victor's violent shaking dislodge my balance.

Ten feet away, Matteo forced himself to his feet.

Blood poured from a deep gunshot wound in his thigh, pooling darkly on the concrete, but his dark eyes were completely, terrifyingly focused on Victor.

"Let her go, Victor," Matteo said, his voice entirely devoid of panic now. It was the voice of a man who had already accepted death. "You have the deeds. You have the accounts. You won."

Victor laughed, a wet, ragged sound.

"You took my brother, Matteo. You think paper and money make us even?"

Victor pressed the blade slightly harder. A thin line of pain flared across my skin.

Matteo flinched, taking a desperate half-step forward.

"Luca," Matteo barked without looking away from Victor. "Shoot him."

Luca stood frozen twenty feet to our left, his rifle raised.

"If I shoot, I might hit Norah," Luca gritted through his teeth, his hands trembling.

"I said shoot!" Matteo roared.

"If he twitches, she dies, Rossi," Victor mocked, tightening his grip on my hair. "Drop the gun, little brother. Or I open her throat right now."

Luca looked at Matteo.

Matteo closed his eyes for a fraction of a second.

He nodded.

Luca slowly lowered his rifle and dropped it to the floor. It clattered loudly in the silent warehouse.

"Good boys," Victor sneered. "Now, Matteo. Kick your weapon away. And get on your knees."

Matteo reached into his waistband.

He pulled out his heavy pistol and threw it sliding across the concrete, far out of reach.

Then, ignoring the agonizing pain in his leg, Matteo Rossi sank to his knees.

He didn't look at Victor.

He looked directly into my eyes.

And in that moment, all the walls, the arrogance, the icy control he had used for three years completely vanished.

I saw the man who had stayed awake rubbing my back when the baby kicked at 3 AM.

I saw the man who had quietly built an empire just to keep monsters like Victor away from me.

I saw my husband.

"I'm sorry, Norah," Matteo whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I should have told you the truth. I just wanted you to be safe."

Tears streamed down my face.

"I love you," I cried, the words tearing out of my chest. "Matteo, I love you!"

Victor rolled his eyes. "Touching. Truly. But I think it's time for the widow to watch her husband bleed."

Victor raised his free hand, holding a small pistol, and aimed it directly at Matteo's chest.

He didn't realize I still had the heavy gold bracelet on my wrist.

The bracelet Matteo had designed for me.

For my life, and yours.

I didn't think. I just reacted.

With every ounce of strength in my body, I swung my arm backward, slamming the heavy, solid gold clasp directly into Victor's wounded shoulder.

Victor screamed in agony, his grip on my hair loosening just enough.

I threw my body weight forward, dropping to the floor.

BANG.

Victor's gun went off, but the shot went wild, hitting the ceiling.

"Luca!" Matteo roared.

Before Victor could recover and aim down at me, Luca was moving.

But Matteo was faster.

Despite his shattered leg, Matteo lunged forward like a wounded lion.

He tackled Victor around the waist, driving the larger man backward into the metal desk.

I scrambled away, crawling over the rough concrete, covering my stomach.

Matteo and Victor wrestled wildly, a brutal, desperate fight between two kings of a violent world.

Victor raised the knife, bringing it down toward Matteo's back.

Matteo blocked the strike with his forearm.

The blade sliced deep into Matteo's flesh, but he didn't even grunt.

With his free hand, Matteo grabbed the heavy metal paperweight from the desk and smashed it against the side of Victor's skull.

Victor collapsed, falling heavily to the ground, unconscious.

Matteo slumped back against the desk, gasping for air, clutching his bleeding arm.

"Matteo!" I sobbed, pushing myself up and running to him.

I dropped to my knees beside him, pressing my hands frantically against the wound on his leg to stop the bleeding.

"I've got you," I cried. "I'm here."

Matteo reached up with a trembling, blood-stained hand and cupped my cheek.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his eyes scanning my face, checking the thin scratch on my neck.

"I'm fine, the baby is fine," I wept, leaning into his touch. "We're okay."

Luca rushed over, kicking Victor's weapons away and zip-tying the unconscious mob boss.

"The police are two minutes out," Luca said urgently, looking at Matteo. "The FBI is with them. Harper just called. She's got the warrant for Victor based on the files your father left."

Matteo nodded weakly.

He reached into his jacket pocket with his good arm.

He pulled out a small, blue passport book.

He pressed it into my hands.

"What is this?" I asked, looking down at it.

"It's yours," Matteo whispered, his breathing becoming shallow. "New name. Untraceable funds. A house in Switzerland."

I stared at him, horrified.

"What are you talking about?"

"When the FBI gets here," Matteo said, his eyes filled with a heartbreaking resignation, "they are going to arrest Victor. But they are going to arrest me, too. I gave them Victor, but I still ran a criminal syndicate for five years. I have to pay for that."

He squeezed my hand.

"Take the jet, Norah. Go to Switzerland. Raise our child in the mountains, away from this darkness."

"No," I sobbed, clutching the passport. "I'm not leaving you!"

"You have to," Matteo smiled sadly. "I promised I would keep you safe. This is the only way."

The sound of approaching sirens wailed through the broken warehouse doors.

Red and blue lights began to flash against the walls.

"Go," Matteo commanded, looking up at his brother. "Luca, get her out of here. Now."

Luca grabbed my arm, pulling me gently but firmly away from my husband.

"I won't leave you!" I screamed as Luca dragged me toward the back exit.

Matteo sat against the desk, bleeding, watching me go.

May you like

His final words echoed in the empty space before the police flooded the room.

"Tell him his father loved him."
