Chapter 3 - THE DOCTOR'S SECRET LEDGER

The bright, sterile fluorescent lights of the hospital's pediatric intensive care unit did nothing to warm the freezing resolve in my chest.
I stood directly beside Emma’s bed, my hand holding her tiny, warm fingers as the cardiac monitor blinked with a steady, reassuring green wave.
The chemical report from the toxicological screen sat on the metal table beside her bed, its findings stamped with the red seal of the State Forensic Laboratory.
"It’s called Tetrodotoxin-D, Daniel," Dr. Bennett said, stepping into the room while closing a blue leather-bound folder.
"It’s a highly specialized, clinical-grade neurotoxin that temporarily blocks the sodium channels in the nervous system."
"At a precise dosage, it slows the heart rate to less than three beats per minute, making the patient appear entirely deceased to standard medical checks."
"Within forty-eight hours, the toxin naturally degrades, allowing the victim to wake up without permanent neurological damage."
"If we had buried her yesterday, Daniel, she would have woken up six feet beneath the earth."
A cold, liquid fury washed over my veins, my knuckles turning a stark, bloodless white as I looked at the medical file.
"She wanted her buried alive, Dr. Bennett," I whispered, my voice flat, dead, and entirely unbreakable.
"Because under the terms of my late father’s trust, if Emma passes away before her eighth birthday next week, the twelve-million-dollar logistics patents transfer to Victoria."
"If she survived, she would have inherited the entire sovereign estate of the Bennett Group."
"But how did Victoria obtain a clinical-grade toxin without triggering a federal audit?"
"She didn't buy it herself, Daniel," my older brother, Captain Marcus of the Federal Treasury's Forensic Division, said as he walked into the room.
He tossed a secure, encrypted digital drive onto the metal table, his face a stern, unyielding mask of protective military discipline.
"Our digital forensic team just decrypted the private server inside the Vance estate."
"We found the transaction logs showing Victoria’s younger brother, Damian, paid Dr. Mercer five hundred thousand dollars to import the toxin from Panama."
"And the death certificate?" I asked.
"Dr. Mercer signed the paperwork without ever performing a physical autopsy, claiming her heart failure was due to a congenital condition," Marcus said.

"They have been planning this execution for six months, Daniel."
"They thought you were too blinded by your grief to ever question the documents."
