Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN BEHIND EVERYTHING

Julian's mother, Margaret Cross, had always been considered the quiet center of the family.
She rarely appeared in newspapers.
She avoided interviews.
She donated anonymously.
She never attended business meetings.
To Elena, she had always seemed harmless.
That was precisely what frightened her.
Julian drove Elena to the Cross estate.
“My mother would never do this.”
“You don't know that.”
“I know her.”
“So did my father.”
Julian looked at her.
“He trusted her?”
“Yes.”
“Then maybe that's why.”
They entered the estate.
Margaret was sitting in the library.
She looked older than Elena remembered from photographs.
Elegant.
Silver-haired.
Soft-spoken.
She looked at Elena.
Then smiled.
“I wondered when you would come.”
Elena froze.
“You knew.”
Margaret nodded.
“For years.”
Julian stared at his mother.
“Did you order the accident?”
Margaret looked at him.
“No.”
“Did you know about it?”
“Yes.”
Julian's face crumpled.
“Why didn't you stop it?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Richard?”
Margaret shook her head.
“Of someone worse.”
Elena stepped forward.
“Who?”
Margaret looked at her.
“Your father.”
Elena went still.
“My father?”
“Your father was not merely an accountant.”
Margaret's voice remained calm.
“He was the architect.”
Julian frowned.
“What architect?”
“The entire financial network.”
Elena shook her head.
“My father was trying to expose them.”
“Yes.”
“Then why are you blaming him?”
“Because he built it first.”
Silence.
Margaret opened a drawer.
Inside were dozens of documents.
She placed one on the table.
Elena read it.
Her father's signature appeared beside the formation of a shell company.
Another document.
Another.
Years of financial transfers.
Elena's hands trembled.
“My father did this?”
“He created the structure.”
Margaret continued.
“Richard learned how to use it.”
“And you?”
Margaret looked at Julian.
“I discovered it.”
Julian stared.
“What did you do?”
“I tried to stop it.”
“Then why hide it?”
“Because your father threatened me.”
Elena's anger softened slightly.
“What happened?”
Margaret's eyes filled.
“Your father told me if I exposed him, Julian would die.”
Julian froze.
“So you stayed silent.”
“Yes.”
“For twelve years.”
“Yes.”
Elena looked at her.
“Then who ordered the accident?”
Margaret whispered,
“Your father.”
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
“He wanted Caroline dead.”
“No.”
“He wanted the evidence destroyed.”
“No.”
Margaret began crying.
“I was there when he gave the order.”
Elena stepped backward.
Everything she believed was collapsing.
Then the library doors opened.
Daniel entered.
“She's lying.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel held a file.
“I found the original.”
He threw it onto the table.
The document showed a different signature.
Not Elena's father.
Not Richard.
Not Margaret.
The signature belonged to someone else.
Julian stared.
“Who is that?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Your grandfather.”
Silence.
Julian's face went blank.
“My grandfather died twenty years ago.”
“Exactly.”
Daniel opened another folder.
“The entire operation started decades ago.”
Elena understood.
“This isn't just about us.”
“No,” Daniel said.
“It goes back generations.”
Margaret lowered her head.
“I tried to end it.”
“But you didn't.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Margaret looked at Elena.
“Because I was afraid.”
Then a gunshot shattered the window.
Everyone ducked.
The bullet struck the wall.
Julian pulled Elena behind the desk.
Daniel moved toward the hallway.
“Stay down!”
Another shot.
Then silence.
Security rushed into the room.
The shooter was gone.
On the floor beside the broken window was a small envelope.
Elena opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A little girl.
Elena at seventeen.
Standing beside the burning car.
And beside her—
Julian.
On the back:
THE GIRL SURVIVED.
THE BOY REMEMBERED.
THE FAMILY NEVER FORGOT.
Elena looked at Julian.
“We're not fighting Richard anymore.”
Julian nodded.
“No.”
“We're fighting whoever built this.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“There is one person left.”
“Who?”
Daniel answered,
“Your grandfather's attorney.”
Margaret whispered the name.
“Samuel Reed.”
Then she added,
“He died last year.”
Elena frowned.
“Then how can he help?”
Margaret looked terrified.
“Because he left a message.”
“For whom?”
Margaret looked directly at Elena.
“For you.”
The message was hidden inside an old clock.
They found it the following afternoon.
A recording.
An elderly man's voice.
“If Elena Navarro is listening, then the truth has finally caught up.”
Elena closed her eyes.
The voice continued.
“Your father was framed.”
She opened them.
“Richard Lawrence was not the mastermind.”
Julian leaned closer.
“Neither was Margaret Cross.”
Daniel whispered,
“Then who?”
The recording answered.
“The person who controlled everything was…”
Static.
The tape stopped.
Elena stared at the machine.
“No.”
Daniel tried restarting it.
Nothing.
Then the lights went out.
Someone screamed downstairs.
A door slammed.
Julian grabbed Elena's hand.
“Stay with me.”
They moved through the darkness.
Then Elena heard a voice.
Lily.
“Emma?”
Elena's heart stopped.
“Lily?”
Her sister screamed.
“ELENA!”
She ran.
Julian followed.
They reached the hallway.
Empty.
No Lily.
Only her phone lying on the floor.
The screen displayed one message.
May you like
BRING JULIAN.
OR SHE DIES.
