PART 4: The Price of Truth

“Rachel?!” Nora cried out, swerving slightly on the slick asphalt. “Where are you? What is happening?”

“Listen to me very carefully,” Rachel rasped, coughing violently. “They have me at the old shipping yard on the Willamette River. Pier 4. But they don't know Leo escaped with the drive.”

“The locket,” Nora realized aloud.

“Yes. It contains the complete encrypted sequencing files. If Vanguard gets it, they can patent the genetic modifications they tested on Leo. They will turn him into property, Nora. They will harvest him just like they did to us.”

Rachel’s voice broke into a sob.

“I’m sorry I lied to him, Nora. I told him you were his mother because I knew you were the only person in the world who would die to protect him. Because he is a part of you.”

A loud crash echoed through the phone lines, followed by shouting in the background.

“Rachel! Rachel!” Nora screamed, but the line went dead.

Nora looked in the rearview mirror.

The dark SUV behind her was accelerating, aggressively pushing past the other cars on the road.

They were running out of time.

She looked back at Leo. He looked so much like her when she was a child—the same stubborn chin, the same wide, expressive eyes.

He wasn't just a stranger's mistake. He was her blood.

“Leo,” Nora said, her voice dropping into a calm, fierce tone. “Hold on tight.”

She slammed her foot on the gas pedal, the tires screeching against the wet pavement as she executed a sharp, dangerous U-turn, heading straight toward the industrial district.

She wasn't going to run anymore.

Ten years of hiding, ten years of wondering why her life felt so empty—it all ended tonight.

Nora pulled into the abandoned, shadowy maze of Pier 4, switching off her headlights to blend into the darkness.

The dark SUV tore into the lot moments later, its headlights cutting through the heavy rain like searchlights.

Nora unbuckled Leo and pulled him close, whispering in his ear.

“Stay in the floorboard. Hide under my jacket. Do not make a sound until I come back for you.”

Leo nodded bravely, gripping her hand one last time. “I believe you, Mom.”

The word hit Nora right in the chest, cementing her resolve.

She opened the driver's side door and stepped out into the freezing downpour, holding the silver locket high in her hand so the bright SUV headlights caught its glare.

The doors of the SUV flew open, and the two suits stepped out, guns drawn.

From the shadows behind them, a tied-up, bruised Rachel was dragged forward by a third operative.

“Give us the key, Nora, and maybe you both walk out of here alive,” the tall man shouted over the roaring wind.

Nora looked at Rachel, whose eyes begged her to run.

Then Nora looked down at the locket, a cold smile touching her lips.

“You think this is just a key?” Nora called back, her voice echoing across the empty pier.

She pressed a hidden seam on the side of the silver pendant.

A bright blue indicator light began to flash rapidly on the device.

“Rachel taught me a lot about tech before she left,” Nora shouted, taking a step toward the edge of the pier above the churning, dark river.

“This isn't just a drive. It's a localized EMP backup. If I drop this into the saltwater, the short-circuit will broadcast the entire encrypted data file directly to every major news outlet and federal server in the country. Your little secret project goes live in ten seconds.”

The tall man’s face completely changed, dropping its cold composure for pure panic.

“Wait! Don't!” he yelled, taking a desperate step forward.

“Let Rachel go,” Nora demanded, her hand hovering over the dark water. “Now.”

With a heavy grunt, the operative shoved Rachel forward. She collapsed onto the wet concrete, breathing heavily but alive.

Nora didn't hesitate.

She tossed the locket high into the air, watching it spin through the rain toward the river.

As the suits lunged forward in a desperate, chaotic attempt to catch it, Nora turned and sprinted back toward her car.

She threw open the door, pulled Rachel inside the passenger seat, and slammed the gear into reverse just as a brilliant, blinding blue flash erupted from the water behind them, instantly knocking out the headlights of the Vanguard SUV and plunging the pier into darkness.

Nora sped away into the night, the heater blasting, her small, makeshift family safe in the warmth of the car.

For the first time in ten years, the shadows were gone.

They were finally free.
